I am working on a "EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT FIBRO" post. To give answers to friends and family.
I get most often 'What is that?' And I tell them 'It is a neurological dysfunction in pain regulation causing chronic pain, cognitive dysfunction, fatigue, and sleep dysfunction.
I usually explain what fibro is (increased sensitivity to pain, sleep dysfunction etc) and then they offer unwanted advice. Like "you should just start exercising more. You should jog." or "I know someone with that; she works full time. Maybe you should push through it". Most frequent questions are from people who know I have fibro but don't really understand what it means. "Why do you have so many migraines? Why can't you drink alcohol? Why did you faint?"
I do appreciate friends who check with me when we eat together and ask if there are foods I can handle. People in my age group (20's) can comprehend a food allergy and jump to help when I say I can't eat gluten. But they have no concept of the pain, stress, anxiety, pill/doctor regimen, and sleep problems. I've been working on pointing out symptoms as they are happening to close friends, but it ruins the moment, if you know what I mean.
What is it? Am I going crazy? What treatment options are available? Am I ever going to get better?
And questions other people ask are " what can I do to help? What can the doctors do to treat it? I thought you were getting better?"
How do you cope with severe anxiety which leaves you housebound
