I have been married to my husband for 12 years this year. We haven't always been happy but since my diagnosis things have really gone down hill. When he gets angry he says awful things like calling me a cripple or just basically stating that I cannot do anything for myself anymore. He treats me as if I am some huge burden that only he has to deal with and how dare I do this to him. He won't sleep in the same room as me, He won't touch me - All under the guise of that he's doing what is RIGHT… read more

Members overwhelmingly validated the original poster's experience as emotional abuse, with many sharing their own stories of partners who became cruel, withdrawn, or controlling after a chronic illness diagnosis. Several members emphasized that staying in such a situation worsens both physical and mental health, with one survivor of domestic abuse noting that emotional wounds heal much slower than physical ones, and another sharing how years of abuse left lasting damage requiring intensive therapy. A recurring theme was the importance of seeking help through couples therapy if possible, but ultimately prioritizing self-preservation, with many urging the poster to find a way out, lean on supportive friends, and never let someone else undermine their confidence or worth.

Yes my dear it is emotional abuse, he is just looking for an excuse for his own failures.

As a survivor of domestic abuse I can say that emotional abuse leaves wounds on the inside and they heal much slower than physical wounds...... It sounds like you are nearing a crossroads in your life... Be strong and please stay safe. ((HUGS))

You are in emotional abuse situation. Yes, I have been where you are. When he is attacking you it's because he is thinking about himself. He is insecure and taking it out on you. I divorced my husband after 21 years together. I had no identity and I fell apart. It was definitely the hardest thing that I had to do. It's not fair to you to continue living in a abusive relationship. I will be praying for you! Gentle hugs always, Darla
