Members confirmed experiencing painful muscle spasms under the ribs that can radiate to the back and make breathing difficult, with many identifying it as either costochondritis (an inflammatory condition common in fibromyalgia) or the MS hug (a nerve-related symptom that overlaps between MS and fibromyalgia). Several members shared practical strategies that have helped them manage the pain, including using Flexeril as a muscle relaxant, alternating heat and cold applications, applying heating pads, and seeking massage therapy once the inflammation subsides. A recurring theme was the frightening nature of these spasms, which can feel severe enough to mimic a heart attack, and the importance of understanding that while terrifying and painful, they are a known symptom that can be managed with the right tools and medical reassurance.

It may be Costochondritis. An inflammatory condition that is more of a secondary symptom in fibromyalgia. Pian in ribs, sternum or breastbone. Sharp stabbing pains that in crease with movement or deep breath. May stem from viral , bacterial or fungal infections. More prevalent in left side side of rib cage. Avoid stretching, or massaging while inflamed or active. Alternate heat and cold applications. There is a face book page called living smarter with Fibromyalgia. I got that info from that page and it is very helpful.

There is something called the MS hug. People with MS get it randomly sometimes. I find that many of the symptoms of fibromyalgia and MS, even though they are not the same disease, overlap. I think it is because they are both nerve issues.

I was going to ask about this and then found this. My pain is generally in the left side upper rib. It feels like a knife is in it. I find myself applying pressure and trying to move the pain but it doesn't work. Has anyone got a clue what might help? It is extremely painful and so irritating it almost makes me nuts.
