New Orleans, LA

One day I was in the store and I asked the lady at the deli a question. She said I was whispering and I needed to talk. I was talking in my normal tone of voice which is weak. And I definitely was not whispering. I think she was so rude.

Members responded with warmth and understanding to the experience of being treated rudely in a store due to a weak voice, offering both empathy and perspective. Several members shared that apparent rudeness can stem from hidden struggles like hearing loss, personal hardships, or stress, with one member sharing how buying flowers for a seemingly moody store worker completely transformed their relationship. A recurring theme was the importance of not taking others' behavior personally, while also standing up for yourself kindly, with practical ideas like carrying a note explaining a speech or hearing difficulty to ease communication.

If there is one thing I've learnt is nothing is as it may seem.
When I moved down here all my normal supermarkets changed I had to start again getting to know people. The lady at 1 counter was extremely sharp seemed extremely moody. At first I thought she's having a bad day.
Yet it continued, I sensed her unhappiness where to another she may appear rude. I decided to buy her some flowers to cheer her up.
The look on her face when I gave her the flowers said everything. Her whole personality changed, suddenly there was a dance in her step a happiness that I'd never seen.
We are all different, Some of us speak quietly some are super loud liking the attention some slink around not wanting to be seen and some love being in the spotlight. Some have many problems at home causing different moods. Some have no home life and are extremely lonely.. All we see is a few minutes of a person. She judged you for being quiet. Yet we never know why she is the way she is.. I certainly wouldn't take her mood home with me. I'd probably buy her flowers but that's just me. Everyone is different

Def not, That's a good question
I get it I'm blind half the time, when it comes to reading even my glasses don't help. I have to fill out prescriptions. The woman up the chemist now she is rude, I gave her the benefit of doubt but after 6 months she's a bitch.. They can get away with it over here, I've been to America and I couldn't believe how helpful people were. I mean they go out of their way to be polite run to other shops to get your size in jeans. Even in the supermarket I could not have needed more help. This woman in the chemist is the opposite to that. I heard an elderly lady mention she uses this stuff called Beautiful next thing I hear is this woman saying 'So we know not to order that then.
Everytime I go in I want to punch her lights clean out. I said something once and the next day she was so sarcastic 'oh how can I help you madam' I thought for a bit. Then said 😎
By jumping out of that window running down the road like a super hero and getting me the lip gloss they do at boots. That's how you can help me πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
She tells people she just says it how it is, So that's ok then πŸ˜‚ staff over here can be rude, you've got to put them right. I can usually tell when someone is having a bad day. That woman in the supermarket came over to me the other day thanking me because no one speaks to her, I always yell 'Hi chick' now I yell it louder. πŸ˜‚ Just to let her colleagues know I know, I also still get her flowers. I have been thinking about this. If you find it difficult to speak I'd write a letter to let people know, Pass it to people 'Hard of hearing. Would do.... We get lanyards here to let people know of any problems we may have. Those are really helpful. Out of all the people I've come across that appear rude it's only that 1 that is really rude. Everyone else has certain problems. I don't think you can really know if someone is having a rough day week year or are plain rude with 1 meeting. 🫠

I agree that sometimes people are just having a bad day, stressed etc. once I was waiting in a long line at the post office. I saw that they only had one gal working and she looked pissed! When I finally got my turn, I greeted her with β€œ wow, what a lot of people waiting on you…I sure would be stressed out and I bet they are not all very nice.” What a different reaction I got !she was so grateful that someone noticed!

Perhaps that lady is loosing her hearing. We should be aware that other people could have hearing loss, even though we can’t see their ability to hear. Just as others can’t just simply look at someone with Fibro to determine IF we’re actually in pain.

Some of my friends and I were just talking about this. Its not just the people working...its everyone. I think everyone is so stressed out they are not even aware of what they are saying or doing.
