How can you keep working when a fibromyalgia flare-up is making you feel completely defeated?
First — that feeling of defeat is completely valid. Flares have a way of hitting hardest when you least expect them, and trying to push through work at the same time is genuinely tough. You are not alone in this. One of the most important things many people with fibromyalgia learn is the art of pacing. It sounds simple but it's actually one of the hardest skills to master. Here are some strategies that can help:
- Break tasks into smaller chunks — don't try to do everything at once, even on a "good" day
- Rest before you're exhausted — waiting until you're wiped out makes recovery much harder
- Set boundaries at work — protect your energy by being honest about your limits
- Be kind to yourself — a flare doesn't mean failure, it means your body needs care right now As one MyFibroTeam member put it, when you feel able to do things, try not to do it all at once and put yourself back where you started with no energy and a lot of pain.
If the emotional weight is becoming too heavy alongside the physical, reaching out to a therapist or counselor who understands chronic conditions can also make a real difference.
