Why don't people list their fibromyalgia symptoms?

Many people with fibromyalgia choose not to share their symptoms for several reasons. It's a common experience in the community, and you're not alone in noticing this.

Here are some reasons why people might keep their symptoms private:

• Fear of not being believed or taken seriously
• Past negative experiences with doctors or loved ones who dismissed their pain
• Worry about being accused of faking or exaggerating symptoms
• Concern about how it might affect employment opportunities
• Feeling that others won't understand the complexity of fibromyalgia
• Exhaustion from repeatedly explaining symptoms to people who don't want to listen

A MyFibroTeam member shared: "I don't go into detail because most people wouldn't understand." Another said they experienced doctors implying symptoms were imaginary, which led to years of frustration.

Some people find it easier to say "I have chronic pain" rather than explaining all the invisible symptoms of fibromyalgia. The fear of judgment and past dismissive reactions can make people hesitant to open up about what they're experiencing.

If you're looking to connect with others about specific symptoms, asking direct questions about particular experiences might help others feel more comfortable sharing.
