It’s a problem for sure. However, I don’t let it affect my joy being around others. I just laugh about.it.

I suffer with really bad brain fog and getting my sentences out without having to stop and think about which words I want to use. Very frustrating.

Are difficulty speaking and thinking common with fibromyalgia?

Yes, cognitive difficulties are very common with fibromyalgia. Up to 80 percent of people with fibromyalgia experience problems with memory and concentration, often called "fibro fog" or "brain fog."

Speech difficulties are a real part of this experience. You might mix up words, stammer, or have trouble finding the right word. As a MyFibroTeam member shared, "My brain fog is mostly when I am trying to speak. I stumble on my words, and my sentences are incorrect. I have to restart a sentence in order for it to make sense."

Common cognitive symptoms include:
- Forgetfulness
- Inability to think clearly
- Difficulty focusing
- Problems with speech and finding words
- Trouble learning and remembering new things
- Issues with organization and processing information

Why does this happen?

Fibromyalgia affects how your brain and spinal cord process signals. Researchers believe the widespread pain uses part of your brain's capacity, reducing its ability to function at top levels. Poor sleep quality, which affects nearly 93 percent of people with fibromyalgia, can also contribute significantly to brain fog.

Managing these symptoms:

- Make lists and write things down to help with memory
- Get regular exercise - it may give your brain more space for cognitive functions
- Follow healthy sleep habits
- Limit activities during times when brain fog is worse
- Be patient with yourself - this is a real symptom, not something you're imagining
