Can fibromyalgia cause schizoid personality traits?

Fibromyalgia doesn't cause schizoid personality disorder. However, it can significantly affect your mental health in other ways.

Fibromyalgia commonly leads to:
- Depression and anxiety
- Cognitive difficulties (often called "fibro fog")
- Social isolation due to chronic pain and limited mobility
- Difficulty functioning in social situations

These mental health challenges are related to living with chronic pain and the stress of managing a long-term condition, not a transformation of your personality structure.

If you're experiencing social withdrawal or feeling disconnected from others, this is often a response to the physical and emotional burden of fibromyalgia rather than a personality change. Many people with fibromyalgia report feeling isolated because they spend more time managing their condition and have reduced mobility.

Depression and anxiety are treatable conditions that commonly occur alongside fibromyalgia. If you're struggling with your mental health or noticing significant changes in how you interact with others, talking with your doctor is important. They can connect you with appropriate mental health support, which can actually help improve your physical symptoms too.

No, but inflammation is a common thread for both FMS and many mental illnesses and disorders.

This is including schizoid personality disorder and other but unrelated disorders on the schizophrenia spectrum.

Yes I had to become a new person. I can edit my book and work on my quilt at 10 minutes to a good rest after.
It is difficult to keep friends. But the ones I have understand when I cannot make it out. I was a very social person. I feel like some days I am going against myself. But grateful that eventually I do see my friends for quick visits

Have a good day.

Before I was finally diagnosed with fibro, I went to the Chicago Headache Clinic for my migraines. The put me on Lyrica. I gained 25 lbs in 6 weeks and was 10ft tall & bullet proof. My husband had to leave me alone for a week in Chicago. I decided to sight see. And did by myself. On the night before flying home I talked with the nurses at the clinic & told them what I'd seen, where I'd gone & how I got around. They all turned white. Guess it was some pretty dangerous areas.
I went home & back to work, still bullet proof. Scared my husband. After 6 weeks, they took me off of it. My point is sometimes when a person takes prescribed medication we don't see the affect but others can. And many of the meds given for fibro can change a person's personality.
