I just got off the phone with a pharmacist that specializes in chronic pain. He mentioned amitriptyline and flexeril as medications that can decrease pain in fibromyalgia patients. Has anyone tried either of these two? Thoughts?

Members shared mixed experiences with amitriptyline and Flexeril for fibromyalgia pain, with many noting that while both medications can be helpful, side effects vary widely from person to person. Several members found amitriptyline effective for sleep and energy, though some experienced weight gain, dry mouth, extreme drowsiness, or dangerous muscle relaxation leading to falls, while Flexeril helped with muscle spasms and flares but often caused grogginess or brain fog. A recurring theme was the importance of individualized treatment, with members emphasizing that what works well for one person may not work for another, and encouraging new users to try medications cautiously while staying aware of potential side effects like sedation, weight changes, and interactions with other drugs.

Amitriptyline affects some people differently. I was told it would make me tired so to take it at night. I got hyper and couldn't sleep till noon. I started taking it in the morning and then I could get to sleep. In the beginning it made me feel really anxious and then I got used to it. I got anxious a bit each time the dose was increase but now I'm feeling good on it and I definitely have more energy on it than when I was on Cymbalta.

I couldn't take them either for side effects on me but as stated by others we are not all the same.

When i was first diagnosed my doctor put me on amitriptyline but for me it caused weight gain very fast so I asked to go off of it For years after I was on a drug called meps and it worked great. I only took it when I was in pain and it never made me tired so I was able to work. After that went off the market they put me on oxycodone and then oxyneo. I also take the flexeril when my muscles get really tight but my pharmacist said it is best to only take that once in awhile because of the interaction with the other drugs. I often start with an ice pack then hot shower if that is not working and the pain is still really bad I take the flexeril until it sorts itself out.

Yes flexeril is a muscle relaxer but I just take magnesium now for spasms. In the form of oil. Now amitriptyline is a TCA one of the first anti depressants on the market. I took it years ago for my anxiety depression and insomnia. I started at 25mg. The next month went up to 50mg and then 75mg. 75mg was the absolute most my body could handle. It makes you very tired and you can have be tired into the next day if you don’t take it 12 hours before you have to wake up. If you take it like that it can energize you during the day. A low dose 10mg - 25mg is used for pain and insomnia. It’s given in higher doses above 100mg for depression and anxiety. I couldn’t handle that high of a dose. I woke up drooling. But that was the first medication that worked for me. Watch out it might cause weight gain. I had to stop it though cause I would get bad heart palpitations after taking it for seven years and if I lowered my dose it did nothing and pooped out on me. It’s a good medicine in my opinion. Just ask your doctor first if you have a history of heart problems. TCAs are known to speed your heart beat up.
