This has been my first year on SSDI and I was told by another person that it is tax free. But I just recently received a SSA 1099. The IRS scares me anyway and they don't answer their phone.
Has anyone had to pay taxes on a disability award, like the back payment granted?
I get too freaked out to think.

Members reassured someone confused about receiving an SSA-1099 form and whether their SSDI benefits were taxable, explaining that if you're single with no other income, you typically won't owe taxes on disability payments, and the form is sent to everyone who receives Social Security benefits regardless. Several members emphasized the importance of not throwing away the 1099, consulting with a trusted tax professional or accountant to review your specific situation, and contacting the Social Security office directly for clarification on both the tax form and whether SSI should have been applied for alongside SSDI. A recurring theme was the value of professional guidance when navigating disability benefits and taxes, as well as the community's concern that the person's attorney may not have acted in their best interest by advising them to decline SSI.

It depends on total household income. This includes I mean money that any member of the household brings into the total household income. For example, a spouse might bring in income or somebody in the house might receive inheritance money.

My husband and myself both get SSDI and we always took all our information to accountant. Because my husband had taxes withheld from his they always filled out forms and what was withheld we got back. This year we were told to stop the amount from being withheld and there was no reason to have to file taxes again. And no neither of us had to pay anything in on the back awards. Hope this helps!

If you have your taxes done for you, give it to your accountant. I WOULD NOT THROW IT AWAY. Paying taxes on it will depend on how much money was made between you and your partner if you are married.

@A MyFibroTeam Member, if it’s just you and you don’t have any other income, you won’t have to pay taxes. You also don’t have to fill out a form for SS to not take taxes out of your check. It’s actually the other way around. If you want taxes taken out of your check, you have to fill out a form. I wasn’t sure what Annieko was talking about, but I see she is from Canada so it would be different because it’s another country.

I am answering for myself only. I am divorced and I have never paid taxes on my SSDI. I have had SSDI since 2000. Hope this helps.
