Hi,
Can anyone help me regarding contribution based ESA?
I'm on this after working for 30 years. I'm noticing that a lot of the additional help out there always says it must be income related ESA. For example the warm home discount.

Are we really exempt from help because we've worked and paid national insurance?

Thanks
Jo

Members shared their frustrations about contribution-based ESA offering far fewer benefits than income-related ESA despite years of paying National Insurance, with many describing feelings of being penalized for having worked and contributed to the system. Several members offered practical guidance, including applying for PIP to unlock additional premiums like the severe disability premium (£61.85/week for those living alone) or enhanced disability premium (£15.75/week), requesting the HC2 certificate for free prescriptions, contacting utility companies directly for energy allowances and discounts, and seeking help from charities and grant programs when traditional benefits fall short. A recurring theme was the financial and emotional toll of trying to survive on basic ESA (£73.10/week), facing home loss due to inadequate mortgage interest support, navigating confusing benefit systems, and the deep unfairness of a system that seems designed to punish those who worked hardest before becoming ill.

I spoke to British Gas because I get both gas and electricity through them. I explained I need the heating on even when the weather is warm. I now get an allowance for my electricity, a refund of £150. A friend of mine has calor gas. The price per unit was reduced from 6.7 to 2.4.
You must phone and explain. They will ask if you receive benefits if it's the right one they give you allowances. Don't be scared of asking. The worst they can say is no but a chance they will say yes. Good luck.

Hi Jo, I have found this info. Enhanced disability premium

You will get the enhanced disability premium if you are in the Support Group or if you get:

Disability Living Allowance (high rate care component),
Personal Independence Payment (enhanced daily living component), or
Armed forces independence payment

This is an extra £15.75 per week.

Severe disability premium

You will get the severe disability premium if:

you live alone,
no-one gets Carers Allowance for caring for you, and
you get Disability Living Allowance (middle or high rate care component) or Personal Independence Payment (standard or enhanced daily living component).

Your ESA will be paid into your bank, building society or post office account every two weeks.

The severe disability premium is an extra £61.85 per week.

Do you get Pip hun if not then.claim for that. There is.something called the severe disability premium (Sdp), which is available to people who live alone and dont have anyone caring for them , but, i think you have to be on pip to get it, not 100% sure on that though.

Oh that doesn't sound good :(
Have a look on the citizens advice website. It's very useful, apart from not telling you how to make an actual appointment to see them!

I've recently discovered that if I go onto the wrag or support group I can ask for the income based top up which is about £15. That then should hopefully cover for all the discrepancies between the two.
