This article segments our appetites and nutritional needs at various decades in our lives in a general overview style which makes for easy reading. I'm interested in other members experience with appetite. Surprisingly, my appetite and desire to cook has decreased since my 40's. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Members opened up about how appetite and cooking passion have shifted with age, with many noting significant changes beginning in their 40s and 50s, including decreased hunger cues, reduced desire to cook, and new food sensitivities triggered by hormonal shifts like menopause. Several members shared practical adaptations they've made, such as using meal delivery services, slow cookers to avoid standing, keeping fresh produce boxes delivered weekly, and tracking eating times when natural hunger signals fade. A recurring theme was the bittersweet loss of a once-loved activity balanced with creative solutions and self-compassion, as members continue nourishing themselves and loved ones in simpler, more sustainable ways.

Now in my 50’s I definitely have less desire to eat and, shockingly, less desire to cook. I loved cooking for so long and now I put it off, along with the shopping, which I also was passionate about. I am exhausted by tricky labeling and poor choices in fresh food. I am currently not gardening or running a farmers’ market, so that is part of it. To ease up the heavy lifting I have tried shopping services like Instacart, but a picky shopper like me has a tough time letting someone else chose her produce. We have a family gathering coming up and I am cooking one of my specialties, which I will prepare with love for my mother’s 80th birthday, but it is very rare. I no longer scan my cookbooks and the internet and for my weekly menu and cooking shows are on the DVR but languish there. I have lost 48 lbs and don’t need medication for my diabetes. The weight loss was through a combination of diet and exercise, and the exercise certainly got easier after the first 20 came off. I haven’t been up for entertaining. It all seems to mush together.

I am looking at 49 in September. Yes my appetite has changed. I noticed around 33 something was off. Drs said premenopausal. BS. I was hit harder every year since then. At 36 food started reactions with me that I never had before. Hives, bathroom dashs and just plain, eww hell no, to some of my favorite foods. What a bummer as, I love to eat and try new things. A poke allergy test ( as opposed to a scratch one) revealed a world of high sensitivity to lots of foods and plants.
A Dr finally reached a conclusion that this now 40 yr old woman was going through menopause. Menopause can trigger allergies and sensitivity where there were none before.
So, for me, my appetite is varied and strict most of the time or I suffer for it. Still love to cook and create. I still love pizza but now rarely eat yeast crust.

I am still trying to loose my weight. Add to it, body doesn't always let me know if it's time to eat. No feeling of hunger. So, I keep track of what time I eat or how does it head feel. My thinking and attitude are a good way of knowing if it's time to eat.

Yes I use honey vs artificial sweeteners. I’m also very fussy about selecting produce.
Thank God we are surrounded by fresh markets.
I buy as I need to
My appetite is smaller these days but I still enjoy food preparation

So cute” just a sandwich seems to make me fat”

Oh boy, with me it’s just looking at a sandwich. Ha ha!
It takes a love of vegetables and fruit, smaller portions of protein and exercise to keep in shape!
Hugs
