I was diagnosed with FM about 25 years ago and have dealt with brain fog that continues to get worse. I was noticing how much I was forgetting, losing words and not being able to pronounce some words anymore, so my doc ordered an MRI. I was referred to a neurologist and after more testing was told that my brain had shrunk more than average for my age (60) and I have mild cognitive impairment. Both of my parents had dementia, so I chalked it up to that, but now I wonder if it could also be a… read more

Cognitive impairment in fibromyalgia.

Cognitive and behavioral impairments are core manifestations of fibromyalgia and may be more disabling than pain itself. Involvement of the central nervous system is ascertained by the fact that frontoparietal and limbic cortices are often functionally and structurally affected along the course of this disease. Even though neuroimaging has brought some experimental evidence to support such network disruption, there are currently no clinically effective biomarkers that detect and quantify cognitive and behavioral disturbances in fibromyalgia; thus, traditional scales and tests of neuropsychiatric assessment remain the most important diagnostic tools. This review addresses the most common cognitive and behavioral impairments in people with fibromyalgia, while explaining their pathophysiological basis and currently available therapeutic options.

Jodie my son is 49 and had fibromyalgia and of course brain fog. Two weeks ago he had an MRI scan of the brain and was told his brain has shrunk more than it should for his age and that it could lead to early dementia. What did your doctor say about it??

Sorry to hear that Erika.
I’ve had FM for almost 30 years and the fibrofog has not gotten worse. In fact since I retired over 3 years ago my fibrofog has been a lot less which I figure is due to the reduced stress.

I feel that the brain fog eventually leads to dementia. That’s what I heard too but who knows
