When I get to the middle of the day my left leg is so sore it makes me off balance. Does anyone know if a stick would help this? Thanks in advance

Members rallied around someone asking whether a walking stick would help with severe left leg pain and balance issues that worsen throughout the day, with the overwhelming consensus being that mobility aids genuinely make a meaningful difference. Several members shared personal experiences with canes, describing how even a small amount of weight relief helps reduce pain, provides crucial support during rest breaks, and offers stability when legs feel like they might give out, with practical tips including trying exercises first, checking for leg length differences that might need orthotic soles, and choosing a cane that feels personal and fun rather than clinical. A recurring theme was the importance of listening to your body without shame, asking for help when needed (whether that's a cane, an electric cart, or a moment to rest), and remembering that protecting your mobility and independence is far more important than any temporary embarrassment.

About 5 months ago I made a cane, which is beautiful (in my eyes, lol) but it really really helps me. I started slowly, only using it occasionally, you know, on bad days when nobody was watching. It didn't take long at all to get the hang of it and soon after I started to see the benefit. Basically, I feel like it does two things really, one - by removing just a few pounds of weight from the leg, it makes a surprising difference, and two - even with the cane, on a rough day, I will need to stop occasionally for a leg break. Sometimes this is every 20 yards, sometimes every 5 yards. Anyway, the point is, The cane is critical for the rest breaks and is wonderful to lean on. For me, it's not just walking, but standing. I can't stand still more than a minute or two or the pain comes on and grows quickly. Sometimes in line at the grocery, or in an elevator, I just can't stand it and I have to basically squat on the floor which, by the way, seems to kind of reset the leg pain and feel pretty good. So, the cane is very helpful in many ways.
Ok, I'll be the one to speak up and say the other little secret that nobody mentions. But I can only tell you if you pinky-swear the Fibro Warriors Oath that you won't repeat it until you get the chance to answer this question to help someone else in the future. Did you do it? OK, Good.
When you're walking with a cane..... people tend to be nicer to you and get out of your way. There. I said it. And by the way - Get a cool one. Seriously. Don't just go to Walgreen's and grab one (although they do have zebra print, etc) They don't cost much and 3 days wont make much difference, Try www.FashionableCanes.com for example. There's bazillions of cool canes. You Gotta have Fun !
Love You,
Keith

I also have a cane for those "just in case I need it) days. I have more problems with my right leg but there are days that my hips hurt and I'm afraid of falling. So the cane is always close by.

@A MyFibroTeam Member - Hi Caroline ! I have the same problem. Both of my legs hurt, but the left one is always first and probably twice as painful. Interesting, I wonder if the left leg pain being stronger is common - Hmmm. Anyway, I didn't see how long you have had this issue, but if it's recent ... Let's just say mine is still getting gradually worse over a year later, so I hope that's not the case with you. Just last week, my worst day yet, I knew I was really rough in the morning, but I drove to Home Depot because I really wanted to get something done. I made it to the front door and absolutely, positively no-way could not bear to take another step. I was done. I was out. I was down for the count. No more legs. It's pretty scary stuff, but for me, I have about as good an attitude most days and anyone, so I really don't let it get me down, I just had to find a solution so, for the first time ever, I asked to use one of those electric carts. Embarrassing, well, sort of, but like I said, the solution is more important, so I was fine with it. One more thought, do you have swelling in your legs yet? Again, I hope you never do, and I'm not here to make this about me, nor do I want to bring you down, but as I've been going through these stages, as I guess we all do, with nobody telling me what to expect next, and therefore, what's normal, well, I just wish someone could have, and we are here to share info so we can all learn together, so sorry about that but I REALLY just want to help.

Dear Caroline, I know about not being able walk properly later in the day. If I overdo it, which isn't hard at all, I just can't go on. One time I was shopping in the supermarket, and it happened. I looked desperately for a place to sit, and saw a small stool that is used by the workers there who stock the shelves. Well, I sat on it holding tight to my shopping cart while all these people asked if I was alright. What can one say? Fortunately, after about ten minutes I was able to go on and finish up. I was so glad to get home and put my legs up.
I hope your tests find the answers you need so you can get the right treatment. Our mobility is precious and it's so hard when it is threatened in any way. Try to stay positive. Don't give up. There will be an answer.
God bless,
Kathryn

Thank you @A MyFibroTeam Member I am seen a physiotherapist today and he said to try these different exercises if they don't I will look at one as I can't walk properly later in the day. First thing is hard due to not movement for a while. They are doing more tests too x
