Recently I have developed serious breathing problems which is very much like asthma. I can't figure out what if any of the triggers. Seems to be with me all the time but worse at night. I never had asthma before but years ago had pneumonia. Is there any connection with fibro?

Members explored the connection between fibromyalgia and breathing difficulties, with several sharing experiences of developing asthma-like symptoms, nighttime wheezing, and chronic congestion that seemed to worsen alongside their fibro. Many offered practical strategies, including getting tested for sleep apnea, using inhalers or nebulizers, washing hair and changing pillowcases before bed to remove allergens, seeing pulmonary or ENT specialists for proper diagnosis, and considering whether allergies, medications, or environmental triggers like humidity, pollen, or wildfire smoke might be contributing factors. A recurring theme was the challenge of distinguishing new symptoms from fibro-related pain, the importance of advocating for thorough testing, and the comfort of community support during the frustrating journey of managing overlapping chronic conditions.

Don't know if it's related to fibro, but I had similar symptoms a few years ago, including coughing and phlegm always. I went to ENT, Allergy, Pulmonary specialists and, after testing and other diagnostic things including a breathing test, I was diagnosed with a rare form of ashtma - not related to allergies. I also have rhinitis - the constant drip into the mouth and throat from the sinususes (I have chronic sinusitis and bronchitis)/ Different specialists got me allergy medicine, rhinitis medicine (nasal spray) and asthma medicines. It took a while for me to see improvement, but I am breathing much better now and not coughing. I do get chest pains at time - so severe I went to the ER because my chest was burning. My doc also told me that fibro is probably causing the chest pains but to call him if it got that bad again.

Hi there

I have chronic asthma with fibro . My advice would be to ask your doc for a test for sleep apnea if it's worse at night as mine is . I tested positive for this and have a cpap machine now which really helps and aids a restful sleep. I also have a nebuliser which I have to use 4 times a day . I would also advise checking any meds and side effects as well , for example asthmatics cannot take ibuprofen etc. Hope this helps xxx

Some areas of the country have lots of smoke from forestfires. When traveling, that got me coughing and a week later I believe my lungs are still working on clearing out. Hugs and hope you find a doc that helps.

Hello @A MyFibroTeam Member.. fellow fibro survivor..I've had the exact same thing going on. I know it's hard for me to breathe in the humidity so I don't get out much at all with high humidity in the air.
I find it's hard to even fall asleep at night because I wheeze so loud.
So I wonder the same thing if it's connected to fibro.
I do have an inhaler, but only use it at night if can't fall asleep from noisy wheezing.
I have an appointment with my family physician in Sept. I'm going to ask her because I've never been diagnosed with asthma, but I do have hayfever which I suffer in Fall so wheezing could be from that.
I was tested for ragweed allergies years ago so my family doc of 20 years knows
So I'm going to check why is it all the sudden this year getting so bad.
Both of us should check with our family dr. To make sure it's not upper respiratory infection. It's hard with fibro, and I'm sure you know this yourself, since we hurt all the time it's hard to tell if have flu or upper respiratory unless we show new symptoms...or new developing allergies or if it is stemming from fibro.
Forgive me for being so wordy. I'll be happy to share with you what I find out if you like, but until then I pray for you to feel better and may not be a bad idea to inquire or be seen by doctor. It's a scary feeling not to be able to get air.
God Bless you !
Klk
