Hey guys. I'm going back to college soon. I'm really nervous because I have such a hard time concentrating and staying focused. Along with the fibro fog and forgetting things easily. Do you guys have any ideas to make it any easier?

Try drinking warm water or warm water with magnesium when you are in severe pain during classes. If you take Gabapentin, schedule it 4 hours between. Magnesium can interefere with its ability. BTW, Gabapentin only works for me when I take it with food.

Music helps me to focus when I study alone. No clue why, maybe I have a few screws loose but rock/metal music help me think some days and other days spa/meditation music helps me. I am weird and unique like that.

Find an environment that you feel good to study in. Cold places mess me up, so I gravitate to warm places. Some days I need background noise and other days not.

Use a tape recorder in class if permitted. Use your phone to snap pics of lecture notes. There are apps that can translate white board notes. LEARN RAPID READING, it rocks once you get it. I killed courses when I learned that. Study with friends.

Limit caffeine. There are safer ways to get energy. I use Rhodiola and other safer means. Sugar and caffeine are the devil in disguise for us. I am battling the sugar part, lol.

Good luck!

I am currently in my last year at college and with fibromyalgia, it is not always the easiest. I have learned to schedule my classes around my body's schedule. I know that my medicine makes 8am impossible and that I usually need a nap for fatigue at 3pm. I also got with the office of disabilities, got them a note explaining my diagnosis and that helps a ton with classes! I get paperwork for my professor to sign saying they understand my condition and one of the things it states is that I can be excused from class without a doctor's note as long as I email them and tell them I am out because of fibro. This has helped so much. My professors understand that I physically can't always be in class and it allows me to have extra time on tests and can complete them in a quiet setting to focus.

Hi, Brianna! Good to see you here again.
I went back to college in 2010 and it took me 5 years to get my degree in education at the age of 54! If I could do it, so can you!
I had to take classes only part time (one or two classes per quarter). I was working fulltime and taking classes at night. The thing that helped me the most with studying for tests was taking notes on lined notecards so I could put the topic on the unlined side and use them as flashcards. Then I would drill myself and set aside the ones I knew, focusing on the ones I didn't know well.
I also used color-coding whenever possible and made up pneumonic devices to help me remember vocabulary and lists. I usually took some caffeine before tests.
Good luck!

Thank you guys!
Harrison, rock and metal helps me concentrate a lot as well. I am living at home again so I know I won't be able to study here cause it's crazy and full of kids half of the time. So I will be spending most of my days on the library. I also only have classes M-W so I have days to take much needed breaks if needed
