Members responded to the question about unexplained coughing fits, with many sharing they experience the same frustrating symptoms including the gagging sensation at the end of coughing episodes. Several members offered possible explanations based on their own experiences, including an overactive thyroid that improved with medication, allergies that worsened over time, and anxiety or fibromyalgia as potential triggers, with one member noting their doctors found nothing physically wrong despite severe nighttime coughing. A recurring theme was the relief of knowing others share this annoying and embarrassing symptom, coupled with practical advice to see a doctor for proper evaluation since coughing can stem from asthma, allergies, acid reflux, or other underlying conditions.

A couple of months back, i took fits of coughing, which would last from 20 mins plus. I would cough that much, i was actually sick. Wasn't til I went to my G.p, i was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. With medication, & it took a while, my coughing has got alot better. Hope this helpsπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ

I cough all the time! I can't sleep because of coughing. Sometimes it's so bad I'm gagging. The doctors say my lungs are fine my throat is fine. It's just anxiety. I was diagnosed with anxiety disorder 20 years ago and I never had coughing like this until the last couple years when I was diagnosed with fibro. I am convinced it has to be the fibromyalgia!

Lately I do. I believe it is allergy related. I have not had it before. But my kids had.
