Antidepressants?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been on citalpram for a few days and do not like the side effects. I am thinking of stopping as I am not entirely convinced they will help me. Any advice?

I am a "poor metaboliser" of medicine. Suffering with depression since I was 21, (now 60). I had horrible side effects from the older anti-depressants. It was only with citolapram that I did not have bad side-effects.
I changed to Cymbalta a few years ago as it is supposed to be better for fibromyalgia.

You need to give it a good few weeks. Usually the side effects will reduce as your body gets used to it, which will allow your doctor to be able to gradually increase the dosage to a point where you feel it is working for you.

They alwas start at a low dose and gradually increase, this way the side effects are easier to deal with and you can get accustomed to them.

Generally no anti depressant will suddenly work within a few days. Sometimes it takes several months to get the dose right for you, or to try other options as there are a huge number of medications that all work differently.

Unfortunately for me, and I stress this is not common, it took years to find something that was right for me. But when I found one that was working OK, we adjusted the dose up about 4 or 5 times (my depression can be quite severe, I'm just below the absolute maximum dose for my medication), and yes it took time for the side effects to wear off. At first they made me so drowsy all the time, but now they are fine. I take the whole dose at night with some food and within an hour I am asleep from the sedating effect. Without them I literally can't sleep from insomnia.

So yeah...basically be patient. It dose take time to get it right, but when it is right you will begin to feel the difference.

I also caution against going by other people's experiences. What works for one person might be awful for another. Citalopram made me hallucinate, but my friend is on it and is absolutely fine, it really helps her depression. The medication I'm on, a friend I know really didn't do well on it, but for me it is the difference between existing and living. I get to enjoy life because they deal with 90% of the depression. Of course you still may get low days but for the most part the right medication will make those times a normal low like healthy people get rather than the depression we experience.

If you want to talk more about it please message me or something, I'm more than happy to talk it over.

Citalopram is very short half life compared to others.

Unfortunately, where I live there is only one Doctor, a rheumatologist, that used to see patients with fibromyalgia but he is so overloaded that he won't see them anymore. I guess it is worth considering to get a referral to someone in another city. Of course that means going back to my Doctor for the referral! Thank you for understanding! It means so much to be able to speak to others who get it!

Im on prozac. So far its the only one that has helped ive been on the same dosage since oct 2016. It isnt as effective as it was. Probably time to increase the dosage. Im also on lyrica, high blood presure meds and 2 muscle relaxers every night. If not for all theese, sleep would never happen for days then Id crash and burn and have one or two days that I couldnt stay awake.
