Members openly discussed their complex experiences with antidepressants for fibromyalgia and depression, with many sharing that finding the right medication often requires patience through trial and error, starting with low doses, and combining treatment with counseling when possible. Several members described medications that worked well for them, including Cymbalta, Zoloft, and Celexa, while others shared challenging side effects like weight gain, mood changes, and memory loss, with one member emphasizing the critical danger of stopping antidepressants abruptly after experiencing severe health consequences. A recurring theme was the importance of self-advocacy, communicating openly with doctors about side effects, and never giving up on finding a treatment plan that works, as the right combination can be life-changing despite the difficult journey to get there.

That's why if your doctor keep upping the dosage, you should refuse. The higher the dosage, the worser the side effects!

@A MyFibroTeam Member I will also be taking anti-depressants for life, I've sufferered from depression most of my adult life.
Antidepressants don't make us 100% UN-depressed, but they do help a lot. We can still experience sadness & depression especially from difficult life events, and many other things. As my doctor told me, "it takes the edge off".... I think it has done more than take the edge off for me, but it's never going to be 100% when something bad is happening in our lives, it helps us get through it better though than we would without it.
There is always the possibility of having your doctor increase your dose, I have done that, it helps. If you are already at the max dose of your particular med., then your doc can add a different med to boost it. You just need to speak to your doctor about the possibilities, especially if you feel your med isn't working enough for you anymore. God bless you, Moreen. Love & Hugs!! ❤😙

I've been taking Zoloft for many years with no side effects at all, but have tried others like Prozac which gave me a sick stomach, however it works great for my son. Every single person reacts differently to meds, even our children won't react the same as we do to the same med, so it's truly trial & error for each of us. No matter what you start taking the doctor will always start with a small dose, then you wait 3 to 4 weeks for it to build up in your system & see how you react. You just keep trying until the med is right for you, then the doctor can slowly increase the dose as needed until you are feeling better. LIke @A MyFibroTeam Member said, counseling together with the right anti-depressant can be helpful if you are willing to go.

I've been taking Celexa (citalopram) for 8 years and it's the one I get the least side effects. I suffer from clinical depression and will need to take antidepressants for the rest of my life. I did counselling for 4 years during a really rough patch in my life. Both combined works the best but not always possible.

@A MyFibroTeam Member Sounds like you reacted badly to the antidepressants you tried, and I can understand that because I have had meds make me feel like a zombie & suicidal for months while I tried several different ones. However, when the right one for a persons chemistry is found it really does help! It can be life saving, so not all antidepressants are bad, and not everyone can tolerate some of them, but there is usually something that WILL work without the bad side effects. It's just a really difficult journey to go through trying them & having bad reactions until the right one is finally found, which can take months or years. There is also counseling with a Psychologist or Psychiatrist, and again you have to find the right one... some are very helpful & some just are not. God bless.
