How do you deal with your own desire to do more when your body will not respond? Every week I plan to go out on the weekend and have fun with my friends. But when saturday comes, I still want to go out but do not have the energy or desire to dress-up, drive, engage in conversations with other people. So I feel bad because I know that I could be enjoying dinner with friends at a nice place but at the same time can't move a finger to do it and don't want to put energy on going out. Althought ai… read more

Members deeply connected over the frustration of wanting to socialize but lacking the energy to follow through, with many describing the guilt and loneliness that comes from canceling plans or missing out on time with friends and family. Several members shared creative alternatives to traditional outings, including hosting low-key movie nights at home with takeout, meeting friends at parks or beaches where sitting side-by-side reduces conversational pressure, and leaning on understanding partners or pets for companionship when leaving the house feels impossible. A recurring theme was learning to extend grace to oneself, recognizing that pacing and rest are not failures but necessary acts of self-preservation, and that many people without chronic illness also struggle to maintain the social energy they once had.

I understand your pains...literally. My problems are with housework. I work 10hr days but only 4 days a week but I can never get motivated to clean my house! Thank God that my husband is wonderful and understanding. He does so much to help. But he can only do so much also. I just want a clean house...wish I could afford a cleaning service!

Yes the ideas @A MyFibroTeam Member gave are all really good. I used to have a few friends over for takeaway and film nights when I was too ill to leave the house.
It's not going out and partying but it breaks the isolation especially when making conversation is an effort.

I totally understand and I am struggling with this at the moment. My life seems to consist of working 20 hours, barely coping and not having an ounce of energy to be in social settings on my days off! I hate missing out on catching up with friends, I used to be able to handle @ least going out for a coffee but now that seems too much. My Occupational Therapist has recommended having a friend around to watch a movie (or maybe a favourite tv serries) so that I don't have to think too hard since I struggle sometimes with the fibro fog and managing a conversation. I can then be around people but not having to hold a conversation. She also recommended meeting a friend at a park or at the beach where I can sit beside a friend. She said in a cafe you usually sit opposite the person so feel like you have to talk but if you can be in a situation where you can sit beside someone and watch the river or look out on a park you don't necessarily have to talk so much... I am yet to try it though!! Maybe get a small group of friends over for takeaways and a movie at your house? It's tricky!!!

Me too, totally relate. If someone has an answer especially to the CFS side of things, I'll try anything... maybe not cocaine! That might help for a night but the next week would be crap :-( In NZ we say Kia Kaha, it means Stay Strong. It's tough tho.
