Members shared their experiences navigating the disability approval process in Texas and beyond, with most reporting that first payments typically arrive within a month of approval, though back pay often comes later and sometimes in installments spread over months or even into the following year. Several members described frustratingly long wait times, with many facing multiple denials before approval, hearing delays stretching beyond a year, and some waiting over two years just to appear before a judge, with one member's hearing postponed at the last minute due to incomplete medical records. A recurring theme was the strong recommendation to hire a disability attorney or use services like Allsup, as most members credited legal representation with their eventual approval, noting that lawyers handle paperwork, ensure all documentation is ready, and only take their fee from the awarded back pay.

I was scheduled a hearing ,got all the way down to it ,sitting in front of the judge with my attorney of course ,and in a matter of seconds the judge said they didn't have all medical documentation ,and they would have to schedule a new hearing date ,so now it has to go thur social security for a new date and time ,I'm pissed I have been waiting over two years for this hearing ,how do they get by with this,we have no money left for even food after my husband pays all the bills out of his retirement checks, its all gone, this is telling me the judge doesn't even look thur my medical records till he gets there, thats not enough time to make a important decision, this is my life ,and he surely wouldn't have time to make a proper decision, theres a lot to go thur this scares me very much, and they could care less if were in the streets, what is wrong with this world we pay into the system for this when and if we need it....????

I'm in TX, and I used a lawyer on my second try and successfully got approved. The first time, was of course, denied, as all are except blindness and dialysis. I highly recommend using a lawyer Shauna. It doesn't cost any of your current $$, they take their fee out of what you are awarded. I think it was only about 3 weeks before I had my first check. I can't remember for sure, but it wasn't an unreasonable wait. A lawyer will really help you to have everything you need ready for the hearing. You don't want to blow the one chance you get to appear and be heard by a judge. Get help. Well worth the cost.

The lawyer said to apply and after they deny you give us a call, so I was denied and I talked to the lawyer and they said when they deny you again call us but they kept calling me instead, asking if I heard any thing yet( this is the biggest disability lawyer in Chatt.). After I was denied again I did not call the lawyer but the lawyer called me and told me to go to SSA and get my records and ask for a hearing date. I ask what they were going to do and they said it was standard for us to get all this info to which I replied no it wasn't because I had help my mother get on disability after she was in car accident and we use this law firm. After I went to SSA and got records the firm called me and I told them I was waiting on the court to send me a date to appear to which they said to let them know when it was set and then I could come in and sign papers to officially employ them. I ask her just what she thought she had done or will do to justify them getting paid to represent me. I told them they were crazy if they thought I was going to employ them to come in and stand by me in front of the judge and then get a portion of my back pay when they had not done a darn thing. I had done all the work. She piously said she was sorry I felt that way and if I changed my mind to give her a call. I am still waiting on a court date.
