I recently asked about having Charlie horses in my calves, well then I found out I have a vitamin d deficiency. My question is the Charlie horses are so bad in having trouble walking. How do I know when it's time to use a cane? I'm limping and sometimes my leg tries to give out on me due to the cramping.

It's time to get a cane when you can walk better with one. I use mine whenever my balance is bad or when the pain in my legs get bad. If it gets really bad I use my walker. Use whatever makes your everyday life more tolerable. It's better to use a cane then to fall into someone or something or even worse to fall down. If you broke your leg you would use crutches and not think a thing about it. If your muscles are't working right, use whatever you need to function.
I have low back problems and hip problems and one leg shorter than the other and it is very very hard for me to walk very far. I'm not yet 40 (October!!) so it's hard for me to admit I needed it, but I broke down a few months ago and got a cane and I've only used it a few times so far, but it's really really helped!!
Great! Glad you will be walking safer.
I like my cane. Get one and try using it. If it helps you will know its time to use it. I use mine for a limping leg and to help keep my balance. Do learn how to use it.
Just a note about my first experience of travelling with my cane. I felt like Moses parting the Red Sea. I would lift my cane a bit and other passengers would part before me making a clear path, strangers opened doors and put my carry on luggage in the overheat bins. What was going to be difficult became much easier because of my cane.
