I am worried about the side effects, especially the possibility of weight gain. My doctor prescribed it for cyclic vomiting syndrome, it's supposed to stop the vomiting attacks. She wants me to get up to 100 mg a day. What are your experiences with this drug?

Members shared mixed experiences with amitriptyline for cyclic vomiting syndrome and other conditions, with many finding it helpful for sleep and some pain relief, though concerns about side effects were common. Several members reported feeling groggy or hungover the next morning, especially if they didn't get enough sleep, while others experienced dry mouth, weight gain, restless legs, nausea, and muscle tightness, with some finding the side effects too severe to continue. A recurring theme was the importance of taking it early in the evening to avoid morning grogginess, starting at a low dose like 10 mg before gradually increasing, and weighing whether the benefits outweigh the side effects for each individual.

It was awful for me. Made my legs ache so bad. Felt like I couldn't keep still. I took a handful of times to try.

I tried it for 5 months. I gained weight and it didn't help much with the neuropathic pain. It helped with my sleep a little - by that I mean I still woke up with pain but dozed off again rather than staying awake for hours on end. It made the mornings hard because I felt even more tired than I did without taking it. The neurologist wants me to try Nortryptyline but I am rather sceptical as it's very similar to amytryptyline.

@Dylan'smum It helps sleep and keeping the migraines away. I do feel tired and hard to wake up in the morning. I guess its a good thing im not working. I didnt get weight gain from amitriptyline but from Lyrica. Good luck. Btw im on 100mgs a night
