I’ve had two rounds of physical therapy for my back prior to the fibromyalgia diagnosis. The back pain never went away. The only thing that helped me was facet injections.
I started physical therapy with a new provider and they gave me exercises that I did before that exacerbated the back pain. I told him that. He said ohhhh you can do it (mind you he is young and thin). What would you do?

Members had mixed but thoughtful experiences with physical therapy for fibromyalgia, with many finding that providers lacked deep knowledge of the condition and sometimes pushed too hard, leading to flares and days in bed. Several members shared helpful strategies like speaking up about pain limits, switching to gentler stretching routines, trying water therapy, Epsom or magnesium flake baths, and looking up fibromyalgia-specific exercises on YouTube. A recurring theme was that listening to your body, advocating for yourself, and going at your own pace are key since fibromyalgia affects everyone differently.

I haven't found physical therapists to be particularly knowledgeable about FM, which doesn't leave them much room for compassion. For every injury I was being treated for, the injury became worse with over-exercise, trying to comply with their generic treatment plans. I think it might be better to develop your own treatment plan, even if it's only doing a few exercises on YouTube, so you can go at your own pace. No one knows your limits like you do. 💜

I once spoke to a physical therapist at a seminar. He told me that he recommends that people start with water aerobics instead of physical therapy because he said that physical therapy is painful. He said that the water aerobics helps a lot of people and it doesn't hurt as much because it is done in the water. However I did have a friend that went to water aerobics and the person that led the exercises kept pushing her harder and harder and so she wound up quitting. The therapist also said people should start with only 10 minutes.

Physical therapy is a waste of money. I think one thing people should try is soaking in a hot bathtub or a hot tub. Hot water will give you relief. Although the relief doesn't last that long as soon as you start walking around the pain is back but. At least you can get relief for a little while.

We are all unique.

For me, no it definitely didn’t help me. Fibromyalgia was my first experience with Chronic Pain. My doctor never took a moment to explain that Fibromyalgia was a Chronic condition.

I was wasting time and draining my savings paying for PT, thinking that eventually the Fibromyalgia would be cured.

NOPE!!

And I’ve also learned the hard way that some PTs can be too rough and can cause additional chronic pain.
