How does fibromyalgia affect your ability to walk?

Fibromyalgia can make walking and movement significantly more difficult, though it typically doesn't cause a complete loss of ability to walk. The challenges come from several fibromyalgia symptoms working together.

Fatigue is a major factor that impacts walking. A MyFibroTeam member described it as "I can hardly walk around because of chronic fatigue." The exhaustion can make even simple movements feel overwhelming.

Chronic pain throughout your muscles and joints makes walking physically harder. One member explained that fatigue "leaves you like an old, damp, worn-out cloth, with no energy and no strength. Getting out of a chair and walking is terribly hard."

Your muscles also don't work as efficiently with fibromyalgia. They need more fuel than usual and don't always relax properly between contractions, which contributes to feeling fatigued during activities like walking.

Additionally, fibromyalgia increases your risk for falls. One member shared experiencing multiple falls in six months, with two requiring emergency room visits.

If you're experiencing new or worsening difficulty walking, it's important to talk with your doctor. They can help determine if this is related to your fibromyalgia or if something else might be contributing, and work with you on pain management strategies and physical therapy options.

Thyroid malfunction can have an effect on walking, too.

My biggest issue is my legs feel like I’ve fun a marathon when I walked up a 2 m slight incline. 😔 I try not to allow the burning in my muscles and weakness to stop me. If I try to walk too far sometimes my legs are agony in the night. Heat helps. And hot baths Magnesium. It’s such a balancing act. I was able to get a diasability permit for my really bad days. I also have a compressed nerve in my leg which doesn’t help. I do walk in water when I can.
I hope you are able to get some help.
All the best. Kx
