You can get an oxygen saturation monitor at a reasonable price on Amazon. You put it over your fingernail and it will give you pulse and saturation to document and review with your doctor. You can also ask for a lung CT and TB test. I don't think this symptom is typical for fibro. I hope you can get some relief soon. 💜

Shortness of breath can be attributed to fibromyalgia.

However, and more importantly, I’m a big advocate of running new and worsening symptoms past your doctor.

It can be far too easy to assume it is just fibromyalgia, but I understand this can go in the other direction as well. 😅
It’s better to be safe than sorry especially with symptoms like this one- I had to learn this one the hard way. 💛

Maybe ask yourself some questions to be prepared when you talked to your doctor? When did you notice this? How long did it last? Things like that.

Is shortness of breath a symptom of fibromyalgia?

Shortness of breath isn't typically listed as a primary symptom of fibromyalgia. The most common symptoms include:

- Chronic widespread muscle pain
- Fatigue and exhaustion
- Sleep problems
- Brain fog (fibro fog)
- Headaches
- Anxiety

However, fatigue is a major symptom that can make physical activities feel much harder. Many members describe feeling exhausted, like they're "walking through molasses" or that "the earth's core is pulling you down."

Getting out of breath while walking on flat ground could be related to:

- Severe fatigue making any movement feel overwhelming
- Deconditioning from reduced activity due to pain
- Sleep disorders like sleep apnea, which is common with fibromyalgia and can affect breathing and energy levels

It's really important to talk with your doctor about this symptom. Shortness of breath can have various causes that need to be evaluated, especially if it's new or getting worse. Your healthcare provider can help determine what's causing it and recommend appropriate treatment.

You may have the co-morbid condition, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. Shortness of breath is not uncommon with C.F.S./M.E. I believe I was taught that it is due to (I am having a senior F.M. moment) oh, yea, mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondrial dysfunction happens when we have less mitochondria, and what we do have has become sluggish. Mitochondria are the 'energy' production cells.
That being said, there are many many things that can cause S.O.B., not just respiratory, or cardiac, etc...often it's a cellular problem of one sort or another.

I read your treatments and story, and see that you have asthma. I do too. Do you have an asthma doctor, pulmonologist? I agree with LindaK2…would be beneficial for you to get checked out. Hugs🩷
