So my husband and I are now trying to start a family, which is really exciting, but it also means I need to start managing my pain without NSAIDs or any other anti-inflammatory meds. 😬 I’m pretty worried about this because Tylenol has historically not been able to help with my symptoms, especially with TMJ headaches, which Ibuprofen and muscle relaxers have really helped manage. Any pain solutions you all have tried that are pregnancy-safe?

Members rallied around someone seeking pregnancy-safe pain management alternatives to NSAIDs for TMJ headaches, with the most consistent recommendations being myofascial release using gentle pressure tools on facial and neck trigger points, warm (temperature-monitored) Epsom salt baths, and consistent gentle exercise to reduce overall pain levels. Several members shared practical strategies including using a yoga block at the occipital ridge for headache relief, practicing mindfulness and gratitude journaling to manage stress, and focusing on posture correction through programs like Functional Patterns. A recurring theme was the importance of starting slowly with any new technique, avoiding certain topicals like CBD and Arnica during pregnancy, being cautious with heat application to avoid raising body temperature, and leaning on community support while navigating the overwhelming adjustments that come with managing chronic illness while trying to conceive.

Arnica and CBD should be avoided during pregnancy and leading up to.
But definitely talk to your doctor about where and how you can apply heat. You’ll need to be careful with any heat and raising your body temperature, maybe more so in the beginning.

I was advised to use a thermometer to take baths, never going above a certain temp. You also have to be careful with heating pads too.

It’s an adjustment, but you will find work arounds and other ways of providing comfort. 💛
And we’ll be here to support you. 😉

Sorry, Sharon, not trying to come off argumentative. I’m thinking maybe you missed the pregnancy piece. 💛🤗

Practicing mindfulness, focusing on self-care, living joyfully in the moment, being grateful, being my optimistic me, leaning on others and being there for other people as much as I can.

Hey friend. I put down NSAID’s prior to my last pregnancy and have not picked them back up.

I also experience bad headaches from TMJ. I have a couple of things I do now to stave them off and also to address them when they come on.
I have lots of little muscle knots everywhere, but also in my face, neck, and traps.
I have a little tool that I use to apply pressure to the ones in my face. And recently have acquired one that also adds a little heat in.
If I do this regularly it makes a big difference for me.
If you were to try any MFR you really want to start slow and gently. Perhaps going much slower than you think you should. You could start with just light finger pressure, graduating to a tool for more pressure and longer times later.

I also have a yoga block I will use at my occipital ridge and also the sides of my neck when laying. It helps me a lot. Especially when I’ve already developed one of those headaches.

Working on your posture is another big one and constantly releasing tension from your face.

Other than that gentle and consistent exercises make a huge difference in my pain levels. I still do not take NSAIDs because of what they do to the gut and another condition I have.

Hope that is at all helpful. Here for you. And congratulations on deciding to try for a family. I know how hard that decision can be when dealing with a chronic illness.
We have many members with children here, hopefully they will weigh in. 😉💛

(I may have mentioned this to you in a different post, but Functional Patterns is who I learned MFR and posture/functional based exercises from. May be worth checking out for you. 🤷‍♀️)

Meditation of any kind. I love ones that are progressive muscle relaxation. There are lots of guided ones on YouTube. If you like phone apps there are plenty to try.
I love journaling. I keep a gratitude journal also. This grounds me. I find it to be better to express than to physically experience stress.

Be extra kind to yourself!
