My mother had fibromyalgia for many years before she died, so as a male I had a pretty good idea what this illness was about before I realized I had it myself. And by the time my symptoms started to get the best of me she had already passed away. I am curious what some honest thoughts are from women regarding men who have fibromyalgia?

Members opened up about the unique challenges men face when living with fibromyalgia, with a recurring theme being that societal expectations of male strength and the illness being perceived as primarily affecting women make diagnosis and acceptance harder for men. Several members shared that doctors are often reluctant to diagnose men with fibromyalgia despite clear symptoms, leading to under-diagnosis and sometimes dismissal of their pain as mental health issues rather than a legitimate physical condition. A sense of profound loss, isolation, and the need to redefine strength emerged as central experiences, met with deep compassion and encouragement from the community to embrace a new kind of resilience.

That's an interesting question! I can only speak for myself, but 2 things immediately came to mind:
Getting sick or having an illness is often harder on men because they're supposed to "be strong and take care of their family". We all know that can't always happen....
Second, people often don't even think fibro is real, and since it's so much less common in men you're probably lots more likely to be accused of "faking it."
Those of us that deal with it every single day know that's not true!
So... I guess while I feel awful for ANYONE with fibromyalgia, I do believe it's harder on men. 😢
Anyway I'm sorry you're going through this!
Take care and Merry Christmas 🌲
Love,
Deb 😘

You call yourself MightyOldman and in the past you probably perceived yourself as mighty until fibro came along and changed your life. Men always want to be strong and manly and so it's devastating to admit you can't do all the things you use to do. Acceptance and sharing your story with us says that you still are that strong man--only in a different way. Men and women all miss their past lives before fibro, but it is what it is and we go on the best we can. What we can't change we must learn to accept and adapt and doing that, it makes us stronger than we thought. Be proud of yourself! You're not alone. You have many warriors here that know how you feel. Hang in there! Never give up hope.

I really believe that more men have it than we think. Men aren’t as quick to go to the doctor as often and they are also very under diagnosed. My brother and I have exactly the same symptoms but I’ve been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and he hasn’t. I think doctors really need to change their point of view.

❤️ yes, I agree in general about women being more compassionate and of course the terrible losses....
I'm really so sorry for you - for all of us dealing with this!
People don't understand how isolating this diagnosis is.
Love you! 😘
