A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi, I have been having bad shoulder pain for over 4 months now. I can’t put my arm behind my back and the pain is just unbelievable. It’s hard to do very much anymore. I deal with so much pain from Fibromyalgia, but not sure if this could be something else. Thanks for any advice.

It could be frozen shoulder, but not necessarily. 🤷‍♀️🫠
I hope you’ll keep us posted when you see your doctor.

In the meantime, I hope some ice and heat will bring you some comfort. Wishing you relief! 💛

Thanks so much for the responses. Yes, I can lift my arm straight up and in front of me. It hurts some, but not as bad as when I put my arm behind me. That’s really bad.

Agreed, it’s always a good idea to consult your doctor first.

Doesn’t sound like FMS to me. It’s often a complaint you hear with frozen shoulder, but there are so many potential causes.
Having trouble putting your arm behind is an internal rotation issue, which makes me think posture- it’s often the source.

Can you tell me if your shoulders round forward?
And if you put your back against a wall, do you have trouble lifting your arm up straight up, in front of you?

You should notify your doctor about it, maybe get an an x-ray or some physical therapy.

Are you experiencing shoulder pain with fibromyalgia?

Yes, shoulder pain is definitely something many people with fibromyalgia experience. Muscle pain is one of the most common symptoms, affecting more than 95,000 MyFibroTeam members, and it can occur anywhere in the body, including the shoulders.

A MyFibroTeam member described experiencing "unbelievable pain and soreness" in their muscles, which is similar to what you're going through. The widespread pain that comes with fibromyalgia can make everyday movements incredibly difficult.

However, since you've had this specific shoulder pain for over 4 months and can't move your arm behind your back, it's really important to talk to your doctor. While this could be fibromyalgia-related muscle pain, the limited range of motion and intensity you're describing might need a closer look to rule out other issues like a rotator cuff problem or inflammation.

Your doctor can help determine whether this is part of your fibromyalgia or if there's something else going on that needs specific treatment. In the meantime, some members find that gentle movement helps with muscle pain, though you'll want to be careful with that shoulder.

Don't wait to reach out to your healthcare provider about this—you deserve relief!
