Can fibromyalgia cause your body to lock up or feel paralyzed?

While fibromyalgia doesn't typically cause true paralysis, the extreme fatigue and muscle dysfunction can make movement feel incredibly difficult or nearly impossible at times.

MyFibroTeam members describe fatigue that makes them feel:
- Unable to keep their eyes open or get out of bed
- Like they've been "administered anesthesia" or feel drugged
- Too drained to function or move
- Like the "earth's core is pulling you down"

The muscle tiredness in fibromyalgia happens because muscles don't work as efficiently as they should. They require more fuel and don't relax properly between contractions, which can make movement exhausting and difficult.

Additionally, the brain changes associated with fibromyalgia can create a disconnect between how hard an activity actually is and how hard your brain thinks it is. This can make even simple movements feel overwhelming.

If you're experiencing new or worsening symptoms where your body feels locked up, it's important to talk with your healthcare provider. They can help determine if this is related to fibromyalgia or if something else might be contributing to these feelings.
