Bladder pain, burning, frequent urination, pressure through my entire groin. All lab results were normal. Turns out I have interstitial cystitis (bladder pain syndrome). It's miserable! Does anyone else have this? It's apparently common for people who have diabetes, pre-diabetes, or fibromyalgia. How do you manage it?

Members connected over the challenging experience of interstitial cystitis and frequent UTIs, sharing both personal struggles and helpful strategies for management. Several members emphasized practical approaches that have worked for them, including eliminating caffeine, taking D-Mannose supplements, using cranberry pills and juice at the first sign of symptoms, and keeping a detailed symptom journal to share with a trusted urologist. A recurring theme was the importance of catching symptoms early, advocating for yourself with medical professionals, and finding hope in the knowledge that these conditions are manageable with the right combination of lifestyle changes and treatments.

Many years ago I was referred to a urologist. That specialist had me watch a video on a surgery he thought I needed. While I was waiting for him to come back in the exam room, I decided to read info packets available on the wall in order for patients to take home.

I read about avoiding caffeine. I was working at the time so I did have coffee a couple times a day. End of that story... I did not need surgery!

I do get occasional UTIs. I called it back to right away at the beginning of burning. I get on the antibiotics right away.

I would keep a log/journal for a few weeks and find a urologist that you trust. I did it and so can you! Everything's manageable now.

How do others with fibromyalgia manage interstitial cystitis (bladder pain syndrome)?

Yes, you're not alone—urinary and bladder issues are actually recognized symptoms that can occur with fibromyalgia. Many people with fibromyalgia experience bladder-related problems as part of their condition.

While the search results don't include specific management strategies from members dealing with interstitial cystitis, bladder issues are mentioned as one of the symptoms that fibromyalgia patients should discuss with their doctors.

Since you've just received this diagnosis, it would be helpful to work closely with your doctor on a treatment plan. Some people find relief through dietary changes, bladder training, medications, or other approaches—but what works varies from person to person.

You might also want to track what triggers your symptoms (certain foods, stress, activities) to help identify patterns that you can discuss with your healthcare provider.

I suffer from UTI's quite often. I have learned at the first sign of one to take cranberry pills and I also drink Cran Raspberry juice. I have managed to avoid them from advancing thus avoiding antibiotics. Doesn't always work but even sometimes is better than nothing.
