Members overwhelmingly related to experiencing heavy breathing, pounding heart, and weakness after simple activities, with many describing how frightening it feels and how their heart tests consistently come back normal despite doctors suspecting cardiac issues. Several members shared that this could be chronic fatigue, shallow breathing patterns common in fibromyalgia, or POTS, a condition affecting the autonomic nervous system that causes rapid heart rates and often coexists with fibromyalgia. A recurring theme was the frustration of doctors not understanding fibromyalgia well, the relief of finally receiving explanations like POTS or fibro diagnoses, and the comfort of knowing they are not alone in these scary and exhausting symptoms.

I'm adding another post to this question. People with fibro are shallow breathers. They breath from their upper chest, so that may be part of the reason we get short of breath. Good ol' fibro---what else can it come up with?

Yes I do. I've had it for years. But it calms down when you sit down for awhile. The doctors always ask you about shortness of breath & if you say yes they assume it's your heart & want to do tests. My EKG's always come back normal. The doctors don't have a clue about fibro. That's pretty sad for them & for us too.

Yes, for me it turns out it's POTS (Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), which is a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. My pulse is almost always high (just standing still it can get up to 150 bpm) and I'm often out of breath and exhausted (even more than my "normal" exhaustion with fibro). If your symptoms worsen when getting up after lying down or lifting your arms over your head it could be POTS (which frequently comes with fibro). It could also just be part of fibro, since we make less ATP (the source of energy) in our cells, but if your heart is beating faster than it should it might be worth looking into and bringing it up with your doctor. Either way it's very frustrating and I'm sorry you are dealing with it too.
