I broke both ankles on Dec 9th , for no apparent reason at all, I was getting ready for work , went to my car for my coffee cup and both ankles gave, breaking them both. I had surgery to repair my right ankle and the left ankle was ok to heal without surgery. I’ve had 6 broken bones in the past 5 years, my wrist, 2 ribs (from coughing) my arm and both ankles, my dr ordered a bone density test and my insurance denied it saying I was to young to need it. Members rallied around someone who broke both ankles spontaneously and suffered six fractures in five years, validating her concerns that insurance denied her bone density test despite clear warning signs of possible osteoporosis or osteopenia. Several members shared their own experiences with vitamin D deficiency and bone loss, emphasizing that 50 is absolutely not too young for these conditions, with some describing similar spontaneous fractures from coughing and successful treatment through supplements like Fosamax and prescription-strength vitamin D. A recurring theme was frustration with dismissive doctors and the critical importance of self-advocacy, with strong encouragement to keep pushing for the bone density test, find a supportive rheumatologist, and not accept being told she's "reaching for answers she may never find."

Amy, I read your story. You poor dear. Being 50 is not too young to have osteoporosis. That’s ridiculous. I have it. My daughter at 43 has Osteopenia, precuser to osteoporosis. Yes you do need a good Rheumotologist. I’m on a pill called Fosamax, no side effects for me. And in the last three years, I’ve gained back some of my bone loss. I had vitaminD Defiency. Easy fix with vitamin D supplement. But see your doctor, and blood tests for ho slow is your vitD. Hope this helps.

I have low vitamin d. I had a bone density test which showed up osteopenia so you are not too young. Keep pushing for it. Good luck x

Thank you so much! This has been so hard. Especially when you feel like the people who are supposed to be helping you, aren’t.
