Members responded to concerns about pain when swallowing food with strong encouragement to see a doctor, as many shared they have similar symptoms but emphasized the importance of proper medical evaluation to rule out serious conditions. Several members described their own experiences with swallowing difficulties linked to conditions like GERD, hiatus hernia, Barrett's esophagus, Sjogrens, and thyroid issues, sharing practical strategies including taking small bites, sipping cold drinks through a straw while eating, eliminating trigger foods, and undergoing diagnostic tests like endoscopies or barium swallow studies. A recurring theme was the danger of attributing all symptoms to fibromyalgia without investigation, with members urging persistence in seeking answers and expressing solidarity around the scary and painful nature of throat and chest pain while eating.

So sorry to hear this Tadpole. Are you eating slow or a bit quickly. are the bites
of food small? Were you stressed? Is your bite off?
I'm thinking of all the things that trigger me sometimes.
Try to pin point the cause is hard to do.
Try keeping track of what you eat when this happens.
For instance could you be sensitive to eggs? Is the raw carrots setting you off?
Sending loving soothing hugs

Please check with a gastroenterologist. It could be a list of things and this way you will know for sure. We tend to attribute everything to fibro. I have Barrett’s esophagus. You can Google it. The symptoms are swallowing problems and esophagus pain.

I have experienced that before. Doctors told me I feel everything from the moment I put it my mouth because of hypersensitivity. I have had all kinds of scopes and tests (a small fortune in my eyes anyway) and they haven't found anything majorly wrong (thank God) except my IBS and fructose malabsorption. I had a BAVO test done also and since then, I feel everything going on in my digestive tract. The first time it happened I was so scared. I called my gastro and they said, oh yes that can happen after that test. Why not warn people so we don't freak out! It felt like I was trying to swallow something too big for my system. Really, really freaked me out aside from the fact that it hurt! I wish you well and hope your drs can figure it out and help you feel better.

I have been having swallowing and choking when I eat or even drink. I am waiting to go to brantford hospital to have a camera down my throat to see what is going on. It is getting really scary, even when I go to swallow no food or water I can't swallow. I had 1/2 of my thyroid removed in 1985 so the specialist is wondering if there are fibroids there now.

I have a hiatus hernia, and GERD, but I have a lot of problems with swallowing/choking, and food causing pain when it goes down, I chew well, and take small bites, I also eat slow. Sometimes the food comes up while the food I am swallowing is going down, that is very painful. Sometimes I can just feel the food painfully going down and getting stuck. Hate this.
