Members opened up about why they hide their fibromyalgia pain, with many sharing that they pretend to be okay because others feel uncomfortable hearing the truth, they don't want to be a burden, and staying positive helps them keep going even when pain never truly goes away. Several members described practical strategies that help them cope, including forcing themselves to move and do light exercise despite the pain, using a code word like 'rainbow' instead of listing symptoms (a technique from Mayo Clinic's Chronic Pain program that protects the limbic system), and finding small victories in daily accomplishments like washing sheets or walking the dog. A recurring theme was the importance of attitude over circumstances, with members emphasizing that they embrace their pain rather than surrender to it, choose gratitude for life as it is, and push themselves just enough without crossing into harmful territory.

I wonder that too. I think a big reason is that our pain and symptoms make others feel uncomfortable. So we act “normal” for their sake and to avoid awkward moments of pity.
