Not depession, but apathy? It's been going on for months and I can't shake it.

In the United States there's been a roller coaster of compounded issues like covid and contentious elections and violent uprisings so I'd like to hear from people around the globe. I know the UK has covid plus EU status change so I'm wondering about that parallel.

Apathy is also a precursor of Alzheimer's years in advance ... and my memory isn't stellar so I don't have a handle on what's going on.

Is it just me… read more

Members deeply connected over the shared experience of apathy during the pandemic, with many describing feelings of indifference, disconnection from self-care routines like showering or brushing teeth, and a pervasive sense of 'what's the point?' Several members shared practical insights, including that apathy can be a coping mechanism for overwhelming news cycles, that social isolation significantly worsens mental health (with one study noting it's deadlier than obesity or smoking), and that maintaining connections even through apps or phone calls is genuinely life-saving. A recurring theme was the emotional toll of being stuck at home, family members not taking COVID seriously, fibro fog creating fears about cognitive decline, and the powerful reminder that this community provides essential human connection and mutual support during an isolating time.

Thanks to all who have posted. I have started feeling apathetic and tired and frustrated. I work in a hospital as an RN. Thankfully no longer at the bedside...too old and broken down with arthritis. Half of my family try to follow masking, social distancing the other half think COVID is just “the flu”. I have tried educating them and talking about my 42 years as a nurse but they choose to believe a handful of people who post that COVID is a way to control all of us. I have Never had a patient on the ventilator because of the flu. Not saying it doesn’t happened just not like what COVID is doing. I feel disrespected by my family and now I am mad. Wish all of the people who don’t think COVID is real could follow these nurses around for 12 hours trying to take care of these patients. Then stick around when you have to make the decision to take them off the vent and let them go. Then get back with me on your conspiracy theories.

You rock fibro friend. I truly enjoy your messages. You should write funny stories and get them published. You've got that unique talent to entertain. Might help with apathy too.

I've been feeling this for a while too. Today I was supposed to have lunch with best friend. I called this morning an cancelled was cold and windy plus I didn't go bed till 4:30 this morning. Just didn't want to get out . Now I feel a little bad that I didn't go. I don't get out much except when I have to. Also stay in gown most day and nights because clothes hurt most times especially bras lol. Thanks for sharing Gentle hugs

I had this same attitude last year from March Break until the end of August. My workplace was shutdown. I am an Adult Upgrading Instructor, and we were closed due to COVID. We opened up in September when the COVID numbers went down. Then we switched to online learning from November until next week, February.
It was great being off work for a break, but the longer I am off the worse I feel. I know the apathy feeling. Not brushing my teeth. I was showering, but I don't care so much as to what I wear. I was sitting watching TV. I would get up late and stay up late reading. Going on the computer. I thought I had malaise, but now I realize that I was lethargic and to some extent apathetic. I was scared to go out. I changed my routine. I went shopping only one day a week. I started going on Saturdays when I could get all the things I wanted in one trip. Stupid drug store has its sales only on weekends. I started going by myself because we were encouraged to have only one person do the shopping. I used to go to work a couple of days for helping pack food boxes for our participants and delivering them. I don't want people to think that I was some type of hero because I have to confess that I didn't want to do deliveries. I wasn't scared of getting COVID except when I first got into my vehicle. When we were only getting small donations of food, I cut back to one day a week. I didn't go anywhere else much. I had to take my cat to the emergency vet because she was dying, but that was it. I also went on a drive to pick up my new kitten. I missed my cat. I needed another one. Other than that I didn't go very far. The summer passed. I didn't even spend much time on the balcony. I was in a real funk. I must have read about three bags of books.
When I got back to work, I felt a bit better. Somedays I have to push myself. The online learning has not worked well for me because I had to learn to use it myself on my own and many of my learners don't know how to use it well.
We had to switch to online learning because the number of COVID cases jumped. After the Christmas Break, the number of meetings and pressures have skyrocketed. I haven't been so busy in such a long time. I am just trying to hold it together.
So I thank you for those who also read this and let me rant. I thank God that we live here in Nova Scotia where the COVID cases have gone down to around 20 cases. No one is in the hospital and no one has died since October. Thank you, Jesus.
I am still in a rut, but doing somewhat better in that I have a purpose to get out of bed in the morning, get dressed, brush my teeth, etc. No, I don't wear makeup. If you don't like the way I look too bad.
Hang in there, my fellow fibro sufferers.

Ummm. Yes. 100%...I can't remember the last time I showered tbh!? And now recently I haven't even been brushing teeth every morning!? That's never ever been before, ever? I now realize that going to all my different Dr appts became my sole social inspiration and interaction...now I'm terrified to go anywhere, but esp. to a Drs office?! So ive only had telehealth appts the last 8 months at least... I'm always masked, everyone else is too, so no one can smell my stale breath or stinky pits or see I have on no makeup or look like crap bc of poor sleep... I'm running in and out of stores, editing my shopping lists down to essentials only, so, slowly but surely...its become "what's the point?" You know?? Staying up later and later, eating dinner at 11pm...I mean, not pretty over here? I gotta snap outta this! Thanks for your honest question, Straw. I always appreciate your posts ❤
