Why stop medication that was working for you? The current opioid hysteria shouldn't affect your ability to take what is necessary and successful. The huge amount of NSAIDs I had to take to control what is essentially a central nervous system problem caused me dangerous liver disease. Since then I take a tiny amount, 4 mgs, of hydromorphone, an opioid, for many years and it works well. I haven't needed an increase in the dosage. It doesn't make me high and dopey. You and I don't have much of a choice. There are no other alternatives. I recommend you find a doctor who knows what he/she is doing and can recognize a better alternative of 2 bad choices. The biggest danger in what you're doing is that it's making your life impossible and miserable which affects your mood which does nothing for your depression from fibro because fibro may not kill you, they say, but depression will. Your physical therapist is not qualified to render an opinion on your medication. I recommend a pain specialist associated with a teaching hospital. There are many ways to mitigate pain beyond pills and a pain specialist can guide you in finding the things that work for you. I wouldn't stop my meds because of the latest medical fad. Since your experience with an opioid worked for you, you have no desire for ever increasing dosages, and you obviously don't play with your meds you don't have a problem with the opioid you use. Your doctor needs to track your progress and by all means investigate other things you can do to relieve your pain. I use self-hypnosis, I've had psychotherapy with hypnosis, acupuncture, acupressure, hot tubs, visualization, myofacial release massage, trigger point shots, herbal supplements, vitamin supplements, lidocaine ointment, CBD oil, CBD ointment, THC for sleep, improved sleep hygiene, a couple of different matresses, etc. The list is very long and most of these things work, some better than others, until you find what works best for you. Research has determined that fibromyalgia is caused by damaged central system cells, the traffic cop cells are amplifying and forwarding signals that were previously ignored. It makes sense to me that a med that affects the central nervous system would work best and fortunately you don't need much for the med to be effective and your liver is spared. Remember you are going to have fibro for the rest of your life and will have to take some med for it until a cure is found, and it's your life and your opinion is the only one that matters. To say nothing of the fact that you only have one liver. I hope you reconsider everything before taking such a drastic step but you do need to have a pain specialist on your medical team.
I would try a muscle relaxant, like flexeril, helps with my pain.
Well written and useful, thank you.
Yes, break the pain/spasm cycle by adding a muscle relaxer for a night or two. Update/change your pillow too.
