Hi,

Does anyone else struggle to attend GP appointments etc? I understand they are there to help but just the stress of going causes a huge spike in pain/irritation/anxiety that I find it so hard to go. Also suffer with social anxiety/agrophobia also.

Am I alone?

Members responded strongly to the question of struggling to attend medical appointments, with many confirming they share the same feelings of anxiety, social phobia, and the physical toll of waiting rooms and travel. Several members offered helpful strategies, including seeking out pain specialists or psychiatrists who better understand fibromyalgia and chronic pain, switching to teaching hospitals or practices with shorter wait times, communicating openly with doctors about cancellation needs, and taking anxiety medication to help manage the stress of appointments. A recurring theme was the emotional exhaustion of feeling rushed through visits, waiting for results that lead nowhere, and the constant fear of flare-ups, balanced by encouragement to find compassionate providers and give yourself grace when rescheduling is necessary.

Plus it can take weeks, if not months to get into a specialist.

I have trouble going to doctors only because I feel like each one gives me different answers and I never know who to believe.

You're not alone, I hate making appointments to doctors because sometimes I know I have to cancel at the last moment. The pain can be so bad I know I just can't walk into the office and sit there for any length of time. But I have good doctors once I explained my situation they understood. So now if I have to cancel I don't get charged for it I just reschedule and hope I can make that appointment

Yup. I find dr appts in general pretty stressful. Probably bc they are never on time. Between travel time, wait time, and consultation time it can take a whole chunk of your day. Specialists are the worst.

If I am not feeling well I reschedule my appts. Bc I can’t handle.

You are not alone my friend. I did switch drs last year (sort of). I see my regular gp for sinus infections, shots, etc. I see my internal medical dr for everything else but even he doesnt believe me until he sees it on diagnostic tests. My body does not react normally. Sometimes I think I'm crosswired. Anxiety tends to visit me when I'm alone, traveling, and at night. There is no rhyme or reason. As stated before, anxiously waiting for the shoe to fall or the rug to be pulled out from under me. Always in fright or flight mode. I'm always in prayer. Hang in there.
