Fibromyalgia doesn't qualify as an autoimmune disorder because it doesn't cause inflammation. ... Fibromyalgia is difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar or associated with other conditions, including some autoimmune disorders. In many cases, fibromyalgia can occur simultaneously with autoimmune disorders.

A 2007 studyTrusted Source suggested that there are high levels of thyroid antibodies in patients with fibromyalgia. However, presence of thyroid antibodies aren’t uncommon and may sometimes exhibit no symptoms.

A 2013 studyTrusted Source linked pain caused by fibromyalgia to small nerve fiber neuropathy. However, this association isn’t yet widely accepted. There is, however, strong data linking small nerve fiber neuropathy and Sjogren’s syndrome. This condition causes painful damage to your nerves. But more research is needed to accurately link both fibromyalgia and small nerve fiber neuropathy.

Though research suggests some relationship with autoimmunity, there’s not enough evidence to classify fibromyalgia as an autoimmune disorder.

I have seen a doctor in Hawaii who specializes in fibromyalgia, and it takes six months to get an appointment with him! Dr. Lim told Fibromyalgia is not an autoimmune disorder it is a Neuro muscular disorder! He also said that have fibromyalgia can increase the rate diagnosed of autoimmune disease and disorders! I am RA, Celiac Disease, Fibromyalgia, Sleep apnea , and heart issues!

@A MyFibroTeam Member, it’s not a matter of “updated” data. It’s about a lot of uninformed doctors and information. I was diagnosed in 2005 with lupus and Sjogrens (both autoimmune) I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2014. Not 1 of my several doctors say fibromyalgia is autoimmune.
