Weird Smells

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone get strange smells around them that they have no explanation for?

I struggle with perfumes and other smells but for the last few days I smell exhaust fumes constantly.

Nobody else does and I am nowhere near cars or anything that could be emitting the smell.

I’ve had this with manufactured smells before like perfumes, cleaning products etc but never this, even laying in bed last night the smell was making me nauseous.

Members deeply connected over experiencing phantom smells and heightened sensitivity to odors as part of fibromyalgia, with many describing mysterious scents like cigarette smoke, burning rubber, electrical wires, and exhaust fumes that others around them cannot detect. Several members shared that their sense of smell has become so sharp that everyday scents like perfumes, cleaning products, men's cologne, and even toilet water can trigger nausea or migraines, forcing them to leave rooms or take medication. A recurring theme was the validation of knowing others experience this maddening symptom, with humor and solidarity shared through nicknames like super-nose and jokes about smelling a mosquito fart, alongside the frustration of having once-loved scents now become unbearable.

Oh, yes! I quire often have phantom smells and odors . I smell cigarettes and the electrical smell another mentioned. And certain perfumes and scents register very strong to me. Other fairly strong scents and perfumes , I'm fine with no rhyme or reason.
It smelled just like someone was beside me or very close smoking a cigarette.
For real actual smells , I've had to leave the room as it made me so nauseous.
Men's cologne , body wash and deodorant can really send me out of the room.

There are times when I smell Chinese food and I’m home, not near a restaurant. My sense of smell is ten times sharper than my husband’s, I smell electric wires burning, it smells hot.

I am really sensitive to certain smells. So much so that on occasion I have had to take nausea medicine.
