I recently had my hormones checked and was told that my hormones are all over the place and was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome. My OB wants to but me on birth control and progesterone pills but I’m scared. I read stories about how some women’s fibro got worse after starting the pill. I’m 33 years old and was on the pill in my 20’s and hated it. Anyone with experience with birth control and fibro? Did it worsen your symptoms, help them?

Members shared deeply mixed experiences with birth control and progesterone for managing PCOS and fibromyalgia, with some reporting that hormonal treatments worsened their mental and emotional stability, leading to severe breakdowns, mood swings, and exhaustion. Several members found relief through hormone replacement therapy or progesterone cream, with one noting that pregnancy was the only time they felt truly well, while another experienced no increase in fibromyalgia symptoms on the pill. A recurring theme was the importance of closely monitoring mental health when starting hormonal treatments, advocating for oneself with doctors, and remembering that treatment can always be discontinued if side effects become unmanageable.

I'm on HRT. That has helped with some stuff.

My advice, from my personal experience: STAY AWAY from the progesterone! Within a month and a half to two months of taking it, I was forcibly admitted to a mental ward due to a complete mental breakdown! I will never again look to HRTs, not ever!!! Sorry, I know this does not sound like my usual uplifting message, but I will leave it this way, God is good, all the time! ❤ Bless you precious peeps xxx

Through out my entire life experience with fibromyalgia, the ONLY time I felt "well" was when I was pregnant! I took birth control from my teens to late 20's. I lost weight, acne disappeared and felt emotionally well. After my second child at age 30, had a postpartum depression and gained weight after giving birth! I have never been the same. Now, I find out I have insulin resistance syndrome, likely from PCOS that I didn't know I had, and following menopause. I believe hormones are what make us women and am working on my Dr to let me try HRT in hopes I can feel better and lose some weight. I wouldn't hesitate to try the treatment your Dr is recommending. You can always discontinue treatment...good luck!

@A MyFibroTeam Member it was with a blood test. I was having symptoms similar to menopause and just over all weird menstrual symptoms. Night sweats, weird breast sensations, irregular periods, pelvic cramping.

I can tell you when I take progesterone cream, my symptoms are less. Progesterone is a neurosteroid.
