Members deeply related to the experience of stress triggering severe fibromyalgia flares, with many describing how even routine tasks like phone calls with insurance or doctors can leave them exhausted, in pain, and needing to retreat to bed. Several members shared practical coping strategies, including having family members handle stressful calls, allowing themselves to hang up and cry when overwhelmed, using cold water and deep breathing to reset, and giving themselves permission to rest without guilt. A recurring theme was grief over lost independence and partnership dynamics, with members mourning how fibromyalgia has transformed them from capable multitaskers into people who must carefully avoid stress, yet finding comfort in knowing this hyper-stress response is a symptom of overactive nerves rather than a character flaw.

Any kind of stress triggers my fibro pain and fatigue to get really bad.. I hate it! I have to be really careful to avoid stress as much as I can. Fortunately, I’m retired... and my kids are adults that can take care of themselves.

Anything stressful will cause me a huge flare. And even when I deal with the issue, it seems the stress has already taken its toll on me.

Yes. All the time. I get mentally fatigued from the things that require more focus . So I end up not dealing with the things I should, because I know where it will put me.

Yes, stress is the worst. I can clean the house, manual labor, easier than dealing with other people. It's the most stressful thing I can think of. You're doing just fine. It's hard to deal with when it happens because it's SO darn tiring and messes with your brain and pain and all of it. Just try to rest your brain & body.
