I’ve been on PPIs for about 6 months now following an endoscopy and finding out that I have hiatal hernia. I developed joint pains and muscle aches 2 months ago. My blood works for calcium, potassium and magnesium came back normal in fact just a little over the high side....
my bloods came back negative for RA, lupus and other autoimmune diseases (thank God)
I do not understand this!! Do PPIs cause joint pains and muscle aches and spasms? Any experience?

Members shared mixed experiences when asked whether PPIs could cause joint pain and muscle aches, with some taking them for years without pain issues while others noticed a possible connection. Several members described managing severe joint pain and muscle cramps from fibromyalgia, which can overlap with PPI use but isn't an autoimmune disease, and one member found relief by alternating PPI doses and being mindful of eating habits. A recurring theme was the complexity of diagnosing pain causes, the possibility of false test results for autoimmune conditions, and the importance of listening to your body while working with your doctor to rule out other conditions.

With those tests for RA lupus and other autoimmunes you can get false positives and false negatives, so you can’ always believe the results. Sometimes you have to be tested several times before you can be diagnosed.

I also use a PPI for hiatal hernia called Dexilant after being on Tecta for years. While I do have fibromyalgia I have linked bone/joint pain to my Dexilant. I try to take it every other day and watch my eating and never lay down too soon after eating on the days I miss a dose. This helps not add to my pain.

I am quite sure that most of us have undergone many tests. I was told it was to rule out any other type of illness. I have lots of experience with the pain you are describing. Sometimes my knees hurt so bad that I cannot walk. The cramping is just rude - middle of the night I wake up screaming in pain. My muscles hurt all the time. I have found when I lay still, with the proper pillows and my heating pad, I do not feel the pain as much. I had to take myself off Tramadol (pain) so I am trying different modalities.

@asainmomof2 unfortunately I think joint pain is just a part of fibro. That’s where most of my pain is, in my joints.
