Weird thing, probably the scariest thing I experience. It's as though I have to make myself breathe at times. Not pain like costochondritis. And I assume I am still breathing cause I don't pass out or anything. But it feels, a few times a day, I have to consciously breathe. Please, has anyone had this before?

Members validated the unsettling experience of feeling like you have to consciously remember to breathe, with many describing similar episodes of suddenly taking huge breaths as if they had been holding their breath without realizing it. Several members suggested possible causes, including anxiety or stress (even when not consciously felt), sleep apnea, or fibromyalgia affecting the breathing muscles, with practical advice to try relaxation techniques, avoid worrying (which can worsen symptoms), and consider a quick checkup with a doctor for peace of mind. A recurring theme was reassurance that this experience, while scary, is shared by many in the community and is likely not dangerous, met with encouragement to breathe through the fear and seek support when needed.

I catch myself holding my breath when I'm stressed out. I really think mine is anxiety.

Yup! I find myself all of a sudden taking a huge breath like i havn't been breathing, its like i hold my breath or something. Stress/anxiety maybe? Not sure if its when im in intense pain or just when im anxious.

Yes! It could be anxiety or generalized anxiety. You don’t realize you have anxiety and it can strike you. Sometimes I can feel short of breath as well.

Yes, this happens to me a lot. Fibro affects the muscles and soft tissues so I guess the breathing muscles are affected too. I don't think it's anything to worry about. Try distracting yourself with relaxation techniques

You may have some sort of apnea. I do this as I am drifting off to sleep if I don't use my C-PAP machine.
