I saw my hematologist last week and they said I’m anemic. I’ve never had that before but it can explain some of the symptoms I’ve been having. They want me to go in for iron treatments. Anyone experience this before? Is it common in Fibro? Thanks in advance.

Members confirmed that anemia is very common in fibromyalgia, often linked to chronic illness and autoimmune conditions, with several sharing that vitamin D and B12 deficiencies frequently occur alongside low iron. Many members described their own struggles with severe anemia causing fatigue, shortness of breath, and muscle weakness, with some trying oral iron supplements for years without success before ultimately needing iron infusions or injections to restore their levels. A recurring theme was the relief of finally having an explanation for exhausting symptoms, the importance of advocating for proper testing and treatment, and the understanding that iron is vital for managing fibromyalgia effectively.

Thank you so much for your response! I have been having shortness of breath and muscle fatigue and just found out anemia causes this. It’s crazy what we go through with Fibro!

@A MyFibroTeam Member, yes! I've been anemic for years! I was fine when I had monthly cycles which is weird because you lose blood monthly. Then after my hysterectomy my hematocrit went from 42 to 31! They did all these tests on me and sent me to a cancer care treatment center. No results! I've been on Procrit, a shot I took weekly! It's what they give to cancer patients who are on chemo and become anemic. No luck after 1 year. Then they tried iron capsules that didn't work! 1 year, no help. So I live with it. Probably keeps me in a fatigued state and I get winded when I exercise because I am so anemic. The diagnosis was Anemia due to chronic illness! (Autoimmune Illness) Fibromyalgia/CFS/Hashimotos Thyroiditis. Hope that helps you!

I had very low iron for about 12 years, couldn't tolerate iron tablets etc and finally talked my dr into giving me iron injections, been about 4 years and ive had many blood tests in that time, iron levels are still good.
