In the past few months I seem to be getting constant IBS symptoms, worse than I've ever had in the past. I tend to have a lot of bloating, cramps and diarrhoea, but it's quite unpredictable and I have a lot of accidents from not making it to the loo in time. Does anyone have any advice? I hate having to constantly plan where the closest toilet is and it's so humiliating when I mess myself :(

Members rallied around someone struggling with severe IBS-D symptoms, offering both solidarity and practical strategies that have helped them regain control. Several members strongly recommended daily fiber supplementation like Metamucil or ground flaxseed to bulk up stool, drinking plenty of water with it, and limiting trigger foods including dairy, onions, spicy foods, sugar, and gluten, with one member sharing how dietary changes dramatically improved their symptoms after a serious health complication from uncontrolled IBS-D. A recurring theme was the emotional toll of living with constant urgency and accidents, the fear of being far from a bathroom, and the importance of advocating with doctors for better management options beyond Imodium, including prescription medications, probiotics, and underlying condition testing.

I have IBS-D and have found using Fibre supplementation such as metamucil and ground flax seed helpful. I know it sounds counter-intuitive to take fibre to manage diarrhea but you need to bulk up the stool. Wish I had know this sooner...unfortuantely my doctor did not take this seriously and then I had a very nasty acute health issue as a result leaving me bed bound and off work for 7 weeks recently (absolutely horrifying). The Colorectal surgeon said it could have been avoided had the IBS-D been controlled. I just used to pop Imodium (not good to take regularly) and suffered... :o(

The other thing I noticed, once I removed sugar from my diet, reduced my carb intake and kept gluten containing foods to a minimum my IBS improved significantly. If you take metamucil just make sure you drink plenty of water...and I mean plenty...like about 2.5 to 3 litres daily or you could end up with constipation.

I feel for you...IBS -D is horrible. It's especially awful when you're away from home and also when travelling... :o(
Sending hugs.

I would also suggest taking a fiber powder. You can put it in coffee or juice and it has no flavor unless you get the thickening kind which I don't suggest. Lol. It may take a week or so to get it in your system so it will cut down on the diarrhea. It is the best way to get ibsd under control. Good luck. Hugs

Poor you, it's awful. Definitely not a good scenario at all. Maybe ask your doc if fibre supplemenation might help. Also, my Colorectal/Upper GI Specialist said there is medication one can take to control the IBS-D. I opted against it because I am managing my symptoms very well but that's another thing you could consider perhaps.

Welcome. My gastro. Dr. told me to take a high potency probiotic supplement daily to help control the symptoms of IBS. Also, certain foods make it much worse. I can no longer eat onions, unless they are green onions, and I can only eat small amounts of gas producing vegetables. Are you getting colonoscopies regularly, to monitor intestinal health? Feel better soon.
