I have so much anxiety. I am afraid of so many things, including driving, eating because of swallowing. I live mostly on pudding which probably the sugar adds to my anxiety. I have no friends or family. I am so afraid just about all the time. I have one excellent doctor but the rest I don't think they believe in CFS/fibro. I am becoming non-functional. My two dogs are everything to me.

Does anyone else have a problem with swallowing solid food, sensations in your throat? What do you do?

Members validated the original poster's experience of swallowing difficulties and throat sensations, with many sharing that they face similar challenges with solid foods, pills, and even water. Several members described medical causes including hiatal hernias, acid reflux scarring, esophageal narrowing, and dry mouth, while others noted that anxiety can intensify throat tightness and swallowing struggles, making it hard to separate physical symptoms from emotional triggers. A recurring theme was the importance of getting proper testing like swallowing studies, endoscopies, and GI consultations to rule out serious issues, along with compassionate reminders that isolation and lack of support make chronic illness even harder, and that seeking mental health care for anxiety is just as vital as addressing physical symptoms.

@A MyFibroTeam Member, having fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue is one thing, but anxiety and panic attacks are not a normal symptom of the first two. I know this because I am diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and have had panic attacks. I have to take medication for this. Anxiety can do awful things to us, including making it hard to swallow in some instances. And if there were a physical problem already making it hard to swallow, then the anxiety will just make it worse. Please take care of yourself by seeing a doctor who specializes in things like anxiety, or consider a good therapist (if you don't want meds) and check with your regular doctor to make sure your throat, etc is okay. I know how awful living with anxiety is. There is a genetic link in families for some forms of it, like in mine. You aren't alone, especially here.
God bless you. ❤

My asthma doctor sent me for some out patient testing. One was a swallowing test as I do have some problems including occasional choking. That part tested out OK. The other part involved my esophagus, and I got bad news there. I have a hiatal hernia, which is fairly common, but it is trying to invade my esophagus which could be fatal. Right now the surgeon has ordered further testing to see how close the hernia is to actually invading., That initial appointment is the end of next week, then he will order probably an upper GI test or something similar. There is a surgery available for this issue, but it is not a fun thing to have. I think you at least should have the out-patient swallowing test.
Please ask your doctor to consider ordering that for you.

I think because of your anxiety, it's causing your throat to be dry and having the feeling that you have something caught in your throat...Another thing that can give you that feeling is if you take medication with little water...that would cause some irritation and dryness.

I have no family (except for a brother with no sympathy who upsets me) I am alone most of the time, yes, I have trouble swallowing, especially pills. Feels like they get stuck in my throat. Are you having any acid reflux? They can do a simple endoscopy to look down there and make sure your throat and esophagus are ok.
Blessings are all of my animals and I am down to 5 dogs. I lost my constant companion dog that slept with me, Charlee last year and two other dogs from cancer. I wanted to die. The dogs listen to me more than my husband.
What helps keep your mind occupied? Do you read or paint or is there something you want to learn how to do?
Since I don't want to get another dog just yet, I bought a hedgehog for $300 and OMG is he a cute little devil. I wear him in his flannel bag on my chest at night and he is relaxing to me and he feels relaxed and comes out. He knows my voice and the feel of my hands.
