Before being diagnosed with Fibro my wife was recommended for surgery on her back and knee. Our new doctor has changed her medication for Fibro and psychologically she is much better. However the pain which predates her Fibro diagnosis and has clear clinical sources continues and is apparently in addition to her Fibro. Our doctor seems to think that every pain is either Fibro or is exacerbated by it. Has anyone got any thoughts on this? Shouid/could she seek an operation again and what are the… read more

Members weighed in on whether someone with fibromyalgia should pursue surgery for back and knee pain, sharing their own mixed experiences ranging from successful knee replacements and shoulder reconstructions to worsening pain after spine surgery. Several members offered practical advice, including trying CBD oil at higher doses, seeking a pain specialist for injections or epidurals, wearing a back brace, engaging in warm water therapy, and preparing for a longer recovery by arranging extra help at home since fibromyalgia can make post-surgical fatigue more intense. A recurring theme was that while separate structural pain can exist alongside fibromyalgia, the stress, trauma, and recovery from surgery often trigger or amplify fibro flares, making it essential to approach any procedure with the right surgeon, a calm mindset, and realistic expectations about pacing oneself during healing.

I have had fibromyalgia for50 years. I was told at about 48 years old to have a back operation but refused. Had bad pain - could hardly get up or walk without crying out. Instead I wore a back brace for a year and went into Trepaline (very drying on the mouth) and Ludiomil. Helped quite a bit. What really helps is doing your stuff in warm pool and cycling with a back rest.
I had a knee replacement. Had lots of pain and flair ups at the start but am SO glad I had it as I walk and do anything with it now at 73 years.
Hope this helps.
I get bitchy when I am very tired and in pain or I just lie down and keep quite.

Yes, for example if you broke your arm that pain is not cause by fibro but...the pain, anxiety, depression and trauma causes or increases the intensity and length of the fibro flare. So... Others health issues that are not associated with fibro in a fibro individual increase reaction from the syndrome. My upset stomach may be from eating spicy food but fatigue and flare I experience the next four day is from not sleeping, the pain from the ache, stress because you have to work the next day, or depression because you can't believe that something as common as a tummy ache from eating spicy food have you in the bed four days. Hope this helps. It's based on my journey. Everyone is different and function under circumstances different from mine.

I have had a full shoulder reconstruction and back surgery, and I was fine. I waiting until I wanted it done, I loved my surgeon and was completely calm and ok with what was happening. I think that made all the difference. Stress has a far bigger impact than anything else in my experience.

ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY. Beware that we will be more tired because unlike other surgeries they want us up and moving. Our body is demanding to rest and they want us WALKING???? Pace yourself and surround yourself with people to help the first 2 weeks you are home- like a portapotty, to do the cooking, cleaning, fluffing your pillows, bringing you water. Seriously, pamper yourself while your body heals.

We don't have to be superwoman. Just healing is a super power in itself.

Yes, you can havevworse pain after surgery. Try a higher dose of CBD. Or add an extra dose. My Dr. said go for it if it works. No on has died of it. I have a new pain Dr. and love home. He’s done injections in places I’ve never had done before and also an epidural. It’s working great. I saw an orthopedic surgeon and he’s been putting a gel in my knees. It’s a set of three. I’ve had two. No pain! And that’s after a bad fall in a restaurant on Sat. Tripped over a table leg. Look around for a pain specialist
