Hi im new here and am newly diagnosed with fibromyalgia and hyper mobility. I am wondering how you all cope if you go out on a day trip? me and my husband are taking our kids to the zoo and i am worried about how i am going to cope but they are so desperate to go. Does anyone use a wheelchair just for long days like this and then manage the rest of the time without one? im worried people are going to judge me but i want to enjoy the day with my kids.

Members overwhelmingly encouraged someone newly diagnosed with fibromyalgia to use a wheelchair or scooter for a zoo trip with their family, emphasizing that enjoying time with loved ones matters far more than worrying about judgment from strangers. Several members shared how renting mobility aids transformed their own outings from exhausting ordeals into genuinely fun experiences, allowing them to participate fully without triggering severe flares or being stuck in the car while their families continued without them. A recurring theme was the importance of self-advocacy and self-compassion, with members urging each other to use whatever tools are needed to live well, reminding one another that no one else truly understands their pain and that strangers' opinions are not worth sacrificing precious family memories.

I just tried to comment here and everything I had written disappered .I also feel judged about the extreme pain that I have sometimes.and I am thinking about getting a scooter also.I can not walk very long at a time or the pain gets worse . My husband of 54 years has been so supportive and he does most of the grocery shopping for me. It is hard to just sit with the ice and then heat but I guess you do what you have to do.. it makes me feel a little better by reading all of the post and see how every one else is copeing with this disorder.

It definitely made a difference in having a fun day. There is no way I could walk around the zoo. I can barely make it to my car in the parking lot 10 feet out the door. As it was, I was able to ride around the zoo, see the animals and enjoy the time with my nieces. We then went to lunch after and I felt pretty good. It made the difference of whether I could even go.

I do whatever it takes to enjoy time with my family. I usually baby myself for a few days before an event to get to feeling the best I can. I take a pillow for traveling and anything else I may need. If you need a wheel chair by all means go that route. As long was you are enjoying your family don't worry what others think...you deserve to be able to have a day of enjoyment.

If you need a wheel chair use a wheelchair. Don't worry about ignorant strangers. Have fun with your family. Took me awhile but I got to the place when ignorant strangers want too judge me I now have the F u attitude towards them. Took awhile but they don't know me I don't have too explain my illness too strangers. I am really a nice person just got tired of ignorance. Enjoy life don't live for others. Take care

Use one if you need. Don't worry about other people's opinions. You have to find what works for you.
