Does anyone else find that aside from the chronic stiff and soreness, in some ways their pain tolerance is weirdly high? I’m told that a lot, a recent example was having to get a wisdom tooth pulled, and because I hate the after effects of freezing I said just try and pull it without any. The entire dentistry staff seemed to find this absolutely unheard of. The tooth was very loose and took under 30 seconds to come out which I had figured so I didn’t see the big deal. Yes I do believe it is. I get occasionally burned without flinching, find cuts that I have no idea how i got them, needles are nothing to me anymore, and I have even had dentist work on me without giving me anything to numb the pain. And yet a hug from my kids feels like they smacked me with a truck.
I think you’re exactly right. So much tuning out that our systems are constantly in that mode, hence why we have high pain tolerance in some respects. Yet in others we are far more wimpy than the average bear. It’s all just really bizarre. But good to know I’m not the only one who has noticed or thought about this oddity of the fms condition.
Agreed Doodlebum. It’s either there’s no pain when there ought to be or bizarre levels of pain sometimes from the lightest touch on one of the weird sore points. Also certain things can make my nerve endings go crazy, such as certain clothing tags, textures etc. It’s not a pain thing but it’s intensely uncomfortable. Fibro is such a weird condition and symptoms seem to vary quite a lot person to person.
Yes! I got a tattoo on my forearm and barely flinched. But my SI joint pain is so bad it's making me grind my eeth in my sleep. I think we have learned to tune things out until we can't. Out of survival.
My in laws have this sitting area in their backyard situated in those pea sized pebbles. No one else thinks they hurt to walk on except me. It's almost excruciating.
We are basically pain freaks, you guys.
But I do feel like w fibro, I go from a 1 on the pain scale to a 10 almost immediately. Like I'm either not in pain or it's horrific.
